Description well, im not feeling very well today, but i managed to put this piece together.
its a result of boredom and depression, and my heart wasnt in it at all.
i dont know if i like it, probably cuz of my mood, but it feels like somethings wrong.

I really like this piece, hope you rally soon....Sometimes when I feel the way you say you are feeling, I just take a break
and surf random deviants to get my spirits up again...There are so many wonderful artists here that I always come
back to myself feeling refreshed and full of ideas....

thanks, but as for browsing dA, it usually makes me feel worse.
i end up running across a million and one pieces that put my entire gallery to shame.

I do know exactly what you mean, sometimes I feel like a real artist until
I go browsing, then I become realistic and know that I have alot to
learn yet from photography and editing, but it spurs me on after I
pull the old self esteem up from off the floor....LOLOL

Ok so here's what i have to say, you're backgrounds (star scapes, nebulae, stars) are excellent, your planets, not so much. I assume you use normal rock/marble/concrete etc. textures am i correct?

actually, no. for the medium sized planet, i did use stock textures, but they were of ice.
as for the other two, i used my own textures, made from some textured brushes i made.
im honestly beginning to think that space art isnt my forte, i just cant seem to get it right.

You're crazy. I just said your nebulae are fantastic, I can't argue them. What you need it proper planet textures. You're doing the lighting and atmospheric effects just fine. Its the textures that are lacking. What size pixels are you planets?

thx for the compliment.
my planets vary in size, but i usually make them pretty big, or start them out that way, then shrink em down.
as for the textured brushes, they were my attempt at no stock usage, but obviously, im no greg martin.
i have plenty of texture images downloaded, some of which came from the site you directed me to, but i just have a thing for trying to do it all myself.
ill have to stop that i guess.

ahh well my planets are all created in 6000x6000 format. I use the NASA visible earth site make "maps" to use for textures. Try taking a few images from that site and "sewing" them together to make a larger image map for your planet. Your lighting and atmospheric effects are all correct, its just the textures that need work.

ALSO, try using an emboss filter. Take the texture layer>copy it> set to overlay>filter>stylize>emboss. Experiment with that.

well, my computer has problems with larger images (my C drive is practically full -_-), but i was in the works of a sewn together texture 10000x10000, until i got sick of how slow it was going. i do use emboss sometimes, but i have had a habit of using 'high pass' a lot lately.

If you use the combinations of filters right, you'll get a perfect planet
