Description Lame title is lame.

This was a vexel I did back in December 2009 along side a tutorial I did for Digital Artist magazine.

A bit delayed, but I wasn't comfortable uploading until I was paid.

Herpderp.

Edit: sweet jesus, this has only been up 24 hours and I've already been given a DD by the lovely Jussta! Thank you so much, sweetpea! !!

Thank you so much, Shar

No, I really do agree with you. As soon as I got the image I was really itching to do something exciting with it, but unfortunately, the client didn't seem all too keen on that.

I'm really glad you like the earring, to be honest. It definitely took the most time out of everything, and with the beads, I ended up doing it mostly reference free except for the overall shape. It could have turned out a nightmare, I swear...

!! thanks Shar

You'll have to pick up a copy of Advanced Photoshop magazine or Digital Artist magazine to find one of my vexel tutorials.

P.s. Do you have the step by step tutorial online?? I'm trying to perfect my skills, and new techniques would be amazing!

Sewwy In reply to vicigraphics [2010-11-03 06:43:21 +0000 UTC]

No, I don't, and it would be against my contract to provide you with a copy. If you're interested in one of the tutorials I've written, you may be able to buy a back-copy of the Advanced Photoshop magazine that the first tutorial was featured in, or a back copy of Digital Artist magazine, which the second tutorial was featured in.

Where would I be able to purchase that?? Could I have the name of the magazine?? Where was it published??xx

Sewwy In reply to vicigraphics [2010-11-05 00:20:35 +0000 UTC]

[link] issue 55 and [link] issue 2.

It seems that they're out of stock from the publisher, but they may still be available from places that stock the magazine.

I know that my initial vexel tutorial featured in advanced photoshop magazine was also included in a larger Advanced Photoshop magazine featuring the best tutorials of the year, which I bought in January, so that may still be available.

Thank you so much for the information!! I actually was able to get the Collection Vol. 4 with the cover of issue 55 on it, so I'm crossing my figures that your tutorial is in it!!

Glad to hear you could get your hands on it! I'd also love to hear how you find the tutorial

I've already made tutorials for vexels. You'll have to purchase the versions of Advanced Photoshop and Digital Artist magazine they feature in if you're interested.

This is absolutely amazing. I love the detail! I'm a minimalist myself, and skip out on alot of the amazing details you've created here. I usually only vector, and am thinking I need to try vexeling at least once. Amazing, amazing all around. Congrats on your DD! Her skin is so amazing, so is everything else. I just wanna..touch it..
Right then. Big yuck spot on my screen now.
Definitely going into the fav pile and appparently I never devwatched you, but I sure as heck am gonna now!

... it was made in photoshop.

Besides, it's not about the final outcome, it's about the techniques used.

You might be using a different technique, it looks like you've got a lot of meshwork in yours, but I could be wrong.

I believe that `ChewedKandi has a tutorial or two you could look at that might help with Illustrator?

the face looks pale while the area around the eyes is darker. doesn't seem like a natural contrast

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Sewwy In reply to Tzupy [2010-05-10 20:06:10 +0000 UTC]

Well, the eyes are the darkest part of the face, and I was aiming to make her pale, so *shrugs*

I wasn't particularly aiming for 'natural' anyway. All of my vexels have a cartoony element.

Great work, although it seems a bit flat. More hightlighting/shine would be better, and she's a bit too pale. Congrats on the DD!

Sewwy In reply to Hexugoth [2010-05-10 20:06:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. If i'd had more time, I would have definitely spent it on the skin. Unfortunately, that's what you get when you're working to a time limit.

Thanks for the comment.

Quick question-- what makes an image a vexel vs. a digital painting?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Sewwy In reply to wha-a-t [2010-05-10 20:09:36 +0000 UTC]

Well, for one, you'd be pretty shunned if you used brushes in a vexel...

If you look at my close ups version of this, you'll be able to see pretty distinct layers: The way I create vexels is through the building up of solid layers and then the lowering of that layer's opacity to slowly build up tone. I end up with thousands of layers, which, again, is probably frowned upon in digital painting.

It's just a completely different technique. A vexel draws on the style of vector art but is created entirely in raster.
