Not fake... actually this is some patch maybe implemented by Gravity a long ago...

Priests also bear crosses on their backs (I think they look cool, compared to this witches in brooms which look troubled for riding them).

Not all servers have this, so I guess you can actually choose not to use it when making your own server.
