An idea I had many many years ago, but never got around to finishing. I found the old sketch while looking through some things and immediately knew had to have another go at it. So, I redrew my first idea and added some things that weren't there originally. For example, James and Meowth were not present in my first sketch, neither was the close-up of the photograph Jessie is holding.If you haven't listened to or even heard of 'The Birth of Mewtwo' CD Drama, then this drawing might be a little confusing, as the photograph is a reference from that, as it was what Miyamoto (Musashi/Jessie's mother) would carry around with her, until it got swept away in a big gust of wind during her mission to find Mew.
I think this idea works for whether you believe Jessie actually knew her mother and remembers her, or if you think she never knew her at all and was so young that she doesn't remember Miyamoto. Whatever you think is true, it would still be quite a shock to find an old photo of yourself in a place you've never been to before.
And who knows? Maybe seeing that would bring back some past memories that Jessie might have buried deeply into the back of her mind.
Also, in case anyone doesn't know, the Japanese on the back says Musashi (Jessie's Japanese name). I could've made it say 'Jessie' but I like the Japanese, and besides that is it's original source. ^_^
Oh, and I could resist more unnecessary touching, he he he. Gotta have some Rocketshipping in there somewhere.

I guess the show is never going to go anywhere too dark. At least not anymore. It was a little different in the early days, but it's definitely very much aimed towards young children all over the world now. Would have been interesting to see this sort storyline explored, though.Β Β

It all depends on if and when the mood takes me. I've not watched Pokemon in years, so the inspiration isn't there right now, but that isn't to say that it won't come back to me in the future.

I completely get that, 100%. It had been years for me too - I stopped watching the English dub shortly before they replaced the voice cast (it had started to become unwatchable even before that, IMO) but have revisited the Japanese episodes here and there. As much as my life has changed and with all of the new things I've taken on, J&J will always be part of me and always be deeply meaningful to me. Every few years they will just suddenly pop back up and I will just be like OTP HNNNGHHHH and suddenly have to draw them again. This time, for some reason the feelings were stronger than ever. Perhaps in part because of all the twists and turns their relationship has taken over the last few seasons (that I only just recently learned about) and it's far more mature than it used to be, as am I - haha. Β Also because I've undergone a lot of new things and big changes in my life over the last year, and as exciting as it is, it can feel overwhelming at times, and revisiting something I loved growing up that is full of nostalgia and familiarity helps to keep things balanced.Β
It's important to hold onto the things we love, even when our feelings toward them shift. 
But yeah, I can't draw something unless I'm really in love with it. I used to draw them 24/7 when I was in high school, haha. But recently I've drawn them quite a bit. And it not only brings me happiness and fulfillment, but it greatly reduces my anxiety. I mean, drawing anything I love will do this, but since I've mostly been drawing them lately...yeah. Heheh. I certainly hope you will!Β

It's Jessie as a child. It was a photo that Jessie's mother took of her and carried with her on her mission to capture Mew.

Jessie's mother was the one going after Mew, as that was her mission. She was one of the best Team Rocket agents and the mission to capture Mew was the last mission she ever went on. The Mew that follows Jessie and James around in the first movie is the very same one that Jessie's mother was going after. Β

Ah, well I wasn't quite going for that kind of mood. At this point Jessie is more disturbed/horrified about finding a photo of her younger self in a place that she has never been to before. The fact that it belonged to her mother and was taken by her mother isn't what immediately springs to mind. It's more likely that she be shocked and more than a little confused in the first instance. Β

That would be nice if they would keep the continuity and not just sweep all the backstories and character development under the rug. However, I can't see them changing the habit of a lifetime now. But yeah, it would be nice if the character's stories were expanded beyond what little fragments we have here and there.
