Description
Wow. this is the first original piece I've submited in like 10 months!ANYWAYS: Power (centre) Avarice(Left) and Lust(Right) are all character designs that depict levels of corruption in a physical form based on 3 of the 7 deadly sins.
I wont bore you guys with the details but the concept I felt was fun to work with, I'm planning to do the other 4 sometime soon.
Ideas are just pouring in one after another...
I did this in PS CS5
Worked over 8 hrs
listening to: sympathy for the devil by Guns n Roses (shocking right?)

Really? When I first saw the art and then the description, I'd thought Power was on the left. Shouldn't have given her the sword then, or such a strong continence.

I have to say I am tempted to redo the entire lot. I like my ideas but I think I could refine the finish. So no worries, Will get on it these december holidays, hopefully kick out new ideas for sloth, gluttony and pride first.

If you think you can improve on it then I say go for it but the first image came out great and the subjects are both beautiful as well as meaningful...so I wouldn't beat yourself up too much lol. I agree its a good idea to do sloth, gluttony and pride first to get a little break on the subjects, otherwise the brain turns mushy and only mush comes out (at least it does with me). However, I thought power related to pride so wouldn't that be redundant? Would envy and wrath be their own work?

You are correct! pride and power are synonymous...I intend to try every single one of the seven as a solo piece and then try for a collective group image afterwards.

Haha. without looking at the description, I saw the left one as power, center as lust and right as avarice. I can see how you would categorize them properly(especially since I just noticed the glow in power's hand)

I'm just curious since you said the "character designs that depict levels of corruption in physical form" I was just wondering why you chose the concept for power to be the center and and not the left as in why you didn't have Avarice and power switched?
I'm sorta into this kinda thing with like personifying different things in physical form so just curious is all hope you don't mind me asking.

oh sure thing man, Thanks for commenting! sorry im kinda neglecting my account but to answer your question, power for me has always been command. I look at the most incredible expression of power to be more than brute strength. The central figure is an uncompromising character. she has knowledge and ability which interprets into psychic power beyond the average constrains of mass and muscle. the bigger gold and purple figure is built like a brute covered in gold to express how passion for wealth is quickly linked to base acts of brutality. Infact the most heinous crimes are motivated by money. Even religious war often has an economic undercurrent. I can see why most would expect her muscle and size to link to power but its really nothing more than just an expression of base raw strength.

Ah, I see, I completely agree with the way you state power to be, I actually asked because I found it well fascinating to find somebody that didn't go for classical brute force to represent power. Personally I would have made Avarice somewhat more demonic in style to set an undertone, but I like the way you did things.
As for power again as I said before I agree with how you presented it, when I think of power I think of like well my story character, slim well defined body but not hulking raw muscle, I think it takes brains and brawn, and a good amount of willpower.

Exactly. Will power is a major proof of power. I think its good your character leans towards that end. its important to note that power is corruptable. It linked directly to the psychology of a character. A concept like the incredible hulk for example has strength derived from anger. he is as powerful as his anger allows him to be. this model is really good for character generation. All the great heroes of myth had genuine psychological power backing up theyre innate strengths.

Well with my character Balisk, he is made of light and dark but, he doesn't represent good or evil, as I believe that light and dark are but elements and not something you can personify with actions, so what he does is up to him and how he feels he should act.
So from this I have his power more or less taking control of itself and he has to struggle to stay in control as in, his elements that he is made from have their own power and try to brake free from his psyche, so his power is corrupted by not only his own mind and emotions but, by the very things that allow him to exist.
I know this is a bit long but, a good example would be a fight he is to weak to survive and darkness gains control over his body so at this point you have will to live, and raw emotion/instincts driving his power to which just make him a monster in terms of fighting, think hulk instinctive fighting mixed with like Dragonballz body/fighting.

(As much as I like the idea of a gorgon being 'lust,' it's worth noting that the whole "evil eye" of Envy is rooted in Greek culture; wouldn't envy be more appropriate?)

Yes you are thats true, however I tend to wonder
about two things. When gorgons stare at their
victims do the victims turn because she wants
you to or do they turn because she is cursed?
If the latter then its less envy and more tragedy
since even those she wants or that want her
wouldn't be able to get close...hence athenas
punishment for her inciting lust.

The general ruling is that the deadly stone gaze is unwilling. Curse indeed.
Other not-so-famously cursed creatures (the basilisk in Harry Potter comes to mind) also possess a similar ability. I think the whole 'snake' thing has something to do with it, too. Valid call, albeit a tough one in this case. (I myself skim the line between Lust and Envy when it comes to snake daemons.

Anyway, I've always wondered how 'power' is a sin exactly, it's a state of being capable for use for either 'good' or 'evil' plus calling lust a sin just plays into the whole hating sexuality because they can thing that Cathlocism has pressed on the world for no adequate reason...

I think by it's definition, where power is exercised freedom is lost, in the sense that one has power 'over' something. This raises many deep philosophical arguments without going into who decides what is 'good' and what is 'evil'. And, sin is all about Catholicism, you cant get around that! FEEL GUILTY FOR YOUR LUSTFUL THOUGHTS! haha. The bible is a great work of fiction. Never let the truth get in the way of a good story. Thanks for making me think about this...now my head hurts.

fiction You are aware that the Bible, though a religious book, is a book with a heavy amount of historical basis to it (e.g.: The wars that were fought, the Kingdoms mentioned, the rulers who reigned, etc). The only areas truely questionable is that dealing with the Genesis Creationist Account and the Revelation, which deals with future events (of course, you cannot disprove argue for or against events that haven't occured yet).

and is harpyish in form.

Isn't greed the same sin as avarice? Maybe you meant gluttony?
