Description
The large swamp felt lonely and forsaken, silence covered the land like a thick fog broken only by the occasional solemn cry of animals the girl could not name. Wet tears streaked the young girl’s cheeks as she haphazardly wandered through the mud and tall grass, she was lost and scared. Having been taken there against her will when her horse, spooked by something had bolted into the swamp,Now it lay stuck in the mud, its terrified cries dieing as its strength gave out, the girl had been saved from the same fate as her beloved horse when a low hanging branch knocked her from her perch atop the saddle. Now she searched for a way out, desperate to find someone, anyone to help her get her horse out of the mud.
But the more she wandered, the more she became lost and disoriented, until she crashed through the undergrowth in a blind run. Wailing and calling for her parents, who would never come. They had told her never to enter the swamp; they had said that child eating demons lived there. And now she had disobeyed them, she was lost, hungry, and alone. Her parents would be so angry with her for disobeying them; the little girl’s heart sank even farther at the thought of disappointing her parents.
Pushing through tall yellow grass the child soon found herself standing where the land ended and the swamp water began. Blue eyes widening in fascination the girl took in the alien world before her, the murky water reached as far as she could see. Its depths were unknown, old timers who came from the swamp to buy supplies from her daddy’s store claimed that its deepest point went to the very center of the earth. But when ever she had inquired about her father always told her that nothing the men said were true, and then he would send her off to go play with her dolls or help her mom restock selves.
Trees larger then she had ever seen before rose up from the water like the skyscrapers in the cities her father told her so much about, moss clinging to their trunks or hanging from branches, their end trailing in the water. Logs and other debris lay in the layer of unknown film that had gathered atop the dark water, like dead creatures that had given up all hope. As strange and spectacular as the place appeared to the child, it meant that she had no where else to go. Fresh tears streamed down her cheeks, she would never find her parents, and no one would help her horse out of the mud. Falling to the ground the young girl sobbed, crying out for her parents once more.
When suddenly a voice spoke, causing the girl to jump, “Are you lost little one?” It asked its words soft and gentle. The little child whipped her eyes and nose before looking around in search of the person that had address her, upon finding no one she sniffed before calling out in a quiet hesitant voice, “Hewo? I-is any wone vere?”
“Do not be frightened, child,” The voice replied, its quiet yet powerful tone as gentle as before,” I am here, you are safe.”
Once again the girl searched for the owner of the voice her eyes scanning the trees, and once again she found no one. A rumbling chuckle filled the air. “I am up here.”
Looking up the girl let out a startle cry, as her eyes met the empty eye socket of a bleached white skull. Scrambling to her feet in an attempt to flee the giant creature, the child slipped and fell face for into the muddy ground. Sniffling and snuffling the girl picked herself up off of the ground her face covered in brown muck. “Are you okay child?” The creature questioned, rising up farther out of the swamp the beast gazed down upon the lost stranger. “Don’t worry, I will not hurt you. “He spoke kindly, taking a moment to gaze off into the distance before adding, “You poor thing, so lost and alone with your stead trapped in my mud. Your parents are worried and call for you, but they do not know you have entered my swampland and so they do not search here.”
Upon hearing the creature’s kind words and the mention of her horse and parents the child ceased crying. Sniffling she pulled herself up out of the mud and back onto her feet. Turning the little girl bravely faced the giant beast she had missed while scanning for humans.
His skin appeared as mud, great locks of moss hung from his head like bright green hair, draped over the only have of the monster’s face that was not a grinning skull. The girl knew that what she was looking at was a demon, whose serpentine body disappeared underneath the murky water before reappearing several yards away. The end of his tail yet even farther away flicked slowly back and forth in an erythematic pattern. If it weren’t for its unnatural movements one would mistake it for a giant log sticking out of a clump of mud. Moss resembling the one that clung to the trees, could also be found clinging to various parts of the dragon’s body. For horns the swamp demon had a dead tree, moss connecting it to the other which resembled a broken more traditional dragon horn.
“You help my horsie?” She squeaked, rubbing the mud away from her eyes she stared up at the imposing form before her, innocent and hopeful. Most demons would have devoured the child long ago, but the wise old swap god would do no such thing, he was as calm peaceful as the first rays of a spring sun and unlike the other demons he did not hold a deep seeded hatred towards his human neighbors. He still remembered the time when demons and humans lived and worked together in peace, still cherished the times when the humans would enter his swamp seeking his wisdom.
But those days had long since come and gone, replaced by hatred and violence. No longer was he loved and held at esteem, now he was feared, hated by everyone: all because of the actions of another demon god. Chuckling good naturedly the demon replied, “Yes child, I can help your horsie. How about I help you get back to your parents as well? They miss you very much” The little nodded vigorously, all fear forgotten as she innocently trusted the dragon. With a low squelching sound the dragon pulled his massive body out onto the boggy land. His four powerful but short limbs holding the creature’s mass several feet off the ground. Water, mud, along with other rank and unidentifiable muck slid off of the demon’s body as he extracted himself from the murk.
The girl gazed up at the huge monster in awe, her tiny mouth hanging wide open. The swamp god looked down at her and chuckled, “Now let’s go help your horsie.” Turning the demon slowly led the way to where the girl’s horse lay stuck in the mud, careful not to go to fast or step on her as he kindly spoke to her, directing her away from dangerous areas of the path before slowing even farther to allow her to happily lead to way. With a feeling of pride the girl couldn’t wait to tell her parents how she had found a demon to come rescue her horse all by herself, and not just any demon but a dragon!

I still have a couple things I want to change on the Swamp god, along with sharpening one of the trees in the background ot add a little more depth.
But I thought, "what the heck, I'll upload it now to show you all!"
I have to say this picture is one of the most detailed I have ever done.
This is one of my favorite pictures I have ever done, I love teh background and the concept for the piece. I wanted to show this guy's soft gentle nature even though he looks like something that has crawled out of Tartarus.
Critiques are always welcome, in fact they are wanted!
Something like this would cost around 20
Characters and art (C) to me
