When your handwriting becomes almost illegible... are you using your non-dominant hand for that drawing? X) (Tyroge)

Yeah, it's a mini challenge within the challenge! Once in a while i have to draw a pokemon with my non-dominant hand + write the text.

Because someone challenged you? That's funny. I did the right-hand/left-hand challenge for drawing Eevee, but I haven't posted it yet.
Have you heard the concept that your non-dominant hand draws at your basic level, and your dominant hand draws at your practiced level?

Yeah. A friend of mine frequents the streams where I draw these and when she says 'it's time' I need to draw the next Pokemon with my non-dominant hand. Makes it slightly more fun.
I haven't hear of that concept, and I don't really wholly agree. I think it's all about how well you can control said hand. I have the knowhow to draw things, I know how anatomy works (sort of) etc. but it's a different thing whether or not I can make my non-dominant hand do it for me. If I practised my eye-hand coortination and control I might be able to draw less shaky lines.
I don't really know what counts as basic level, perhaps it's when you start and you don't have any knowledge on techniques, colour, anything basically. But after you build up your knowledge and your eye-hand coordination improves on the side it's not possible to revert back to a basic stage because you have the knowledge and that doesn't go anywhere if you switch hands.Β
But it's true that when you start drawing (and by this I don't even mean seriously, I mean the very first time you have pencil and paper) the drawing is going to have some shaky lines and ambiguous subjects. So hand-eye coordination-wise I think that concept is quite right. But it's not the only thing that determines an artist's level.
An interesting thought though. Thought provoking.

(Longest response to me I've seen on DA. haha) Maybe it's simply that the skill with which we use either hand is separate, but remains where it was last... so practicing consistently with one hand means the other doesn't improve, but practicing with both means there won't be a skill gap. I saw a post on Buzzfeed where people who hadn't drawn since they were kids drew for the first time again... and it was the kind of art as would go on a refigerator. And it looked like that not because they don't know what masterpieces look like, but because the practice they had implemented was cut short when they were kids.
Anyway, I like the fact that you randomly draw with your left hand. That's a fun trick to make art less serious so it's less work and more play. On the upside, it doesn't become unrecognizable.

Some people actually have the trait to be able to use both of their hands nearly equally, meaning switching hands with no sweat. I know a few artists like that, one once hurt their primary hand but they were able to create stunning art with the healthy one. For some people it's natural but I think without that kind of trait it's not very comfortable to try to train both. Years ago being left handed was considered bad so children who'd naturally use their left hand for writing etc. would be forced to train on their right hand. I have heard from people who experienced this that despite the training it still didn't quite feel natural to use their original non-dominant hand.
Also, it's not really about knowing what a masterpiece looks like, it's more about knowing how to do it. It takes knowledge to even replicate things, with a reference in front of you. Technique is one thing that matters. I still firmly believe it's not possible to put one to square one by just switching hands, not wholly, because artistic improvement happens elsewhere than just the physical part.
Anyway, drawing with my non-dominant hand is a way to make things less serious (but my Draw Pokemon from Memory sessions aren't really that serious to begin with). And it's actually hard! I need to put all my concentration into the drawing and I can't chat or anything while I draw. It's hilarious how hard it is vs. how it looks like when I scribble something very crooked, haha.

I'm not ambidextrous, but I have several left-handed friends and family members, so I know about that.
I'm also aware of the struggle. I don't draw left-handed often, but for an amusing challenge I will. More recently, I found out it makes my cursive handwriting look AMAZING... due to it being completely true to cursive, and not at all rushed... whereas my scribblings are often hard for people to make out. So it's fun to have some small skill with my left hand, but I don't usually put it to work. Maybe I will. X)
Do you do your Draw-from-Memory sessions in a live chat mode online? Do you draw suggestions or randomly generated numbers/names? Do you always draw using digital media, or do you use physical mediums as well?

All DPfM sessions are live with a live chat. I generate all the Pokemon randomly with a special program that's made especially for this challenge. All works are digital, as streaming traditional work is not an option for me and digital is just handier for this.

Very awesome! It's great seeing your work again ^^ The Cacturne looks terrifying and the Rhydon is amazing I also especially love how Xatu turned out. Great work!

Quite a fascinating bunch! Cool quizzical expression on that purrloin. I like your take on shellos too. It's neat in your style, especially with that bundle of head tentacles that make it look like a total diva. The chimecho looks similarly cool. I've seen some pretty weird portrayals of chimecho, I think made it look somewhat mollusc-like. It looks pretty eerie as a jellyfish-like creature, in a good way.Β
I kind of like how you gave mightyena a kind of arched back, making it look a bit more like a hyena. I've always thought mightyena's mane made it look a bit more hyena-like, so I like versions of it that reflect that rather than make it a straight canine. Quite freaky tyrogue though. I like how you handled togepi quite a bit. I've been wondering how a more realistic version of one would look for a long time, I think making it looks particularly chick-like and making its head spikes into feathers was a neat idea. Dare I say it, you may have actually managed to make togepi cuter? Nice going on the little guy!
Cacturne is definitely my favourite here. This thing looks like a demonic combination of Jack Skellington and Pinhead that terrorizes people in their worst nightmares. It is plain horrifying and I love it! I particularly love how its emaciated appearance makes it look perpetually hungry for new prey, no doubt victims who lose their way in the vastness of the desert. Chillingly good work on this arid-land-reigning prickly monster! You've really done well here!

Stunky/no buttface ftw xDDD And that Mightyena with the anatomy more like a hyena... Fenrir looks better to me, wolfs seem cooler than hyenas xD But my favourite here is Xatu, altough Rhydon and Empoleon look awesome too. Very good job! X3

Mightyena is based on a brown hyena so I tried to go that way is time. Hyenas are pretty cool, especially their social behaviour is very neat.
Thanks!

So cool when you do these group drawings, and it's a nice way to see your interpretations of the 'mons.
I think Xatu and Cacturne were my favorites, damn your talent! Also, kudos or drawing Lucario with shorts, and not grotesque elephantiasisΒ thighs.

Holy Cow, the things I must have missed. Cacturne and Lucario are kickass, and I think I'm seeing Xatu in a new light. Porygon is interesting. All in all, I'm sorry I had to go, but hey. Good stream.
