A new animal to the space animal series! This one was inspired by the theory that Jupiter's moon, Io, would actually have a subsurface ocean. Io is also said to have volcanic activity which causes huge geysers to happen. I wanted to go for a more calm and chill atmosphere with this one. It was fun looking for references of swimming polar bears, they're really cool creatures.
I feel like I got a pretty nice and steady water theme going on with these and I got more ideas that fit in the same theme. So, expect more water space animals!
I hope you like it!

I must admit, I'm curious and excited to think of what further curious, beautiful things you'll make from water colors, especially when you say there'll be more like this.
From what I've seen/read/heard, Io's activity is caused by tidal forces with Jupiter. Io's orbit is elliptical, being more of an oval than a perfect circle, meaning Io gets closer and farther away from Jupiter at different points in its orbit. As it gets closer Jupiter's gravity squeezes Io, and when it gets farther away it isn't squeezing so much. Because Io is constantly being compressed and, er, less compressed, this creates friction in its interior, so much that the little rocky sphere heats up - and, because it's being squeezed, material is even ejected...it's not so unlike squeezing a grape.
Needless to say, when I think of Io, polar bears are probably the last creatures I'd think of (shows what I get for a lack of imagination). It's intriguing to think there might be oceans on Io below the surface. I heard there might be subsurface oceans on Europa, or lakes of liquid methane on Titan, one of Saturn's moons, and that either one could support life. Io's especially curious because if there is an ocean, you'd think it'd run out eventually. But more to the point, water isn't the only thing needed to support life. You need a source of energy, and Io is too far away to get heated by the sun. But that tidal heating I mentioned? If it's enough to create volcanic activity, it's plenty enough to get life. On Earth there are organisms that subside only on the undersea volcanic vents in the deep parts of the oceans, so the possibility of similar organisms living on subsurface oceans on Io isn't that far-fetched.

The image this creates of Io's oceans is a bit shattered when you realize that Io looks like decaying cheese and probably smells like a satellite-sized rotten egg. (;
But nevertheless, this is a great painting! I love the theme you've got going, mixing an outer-space vibe with animal paintings. Wonderful!

Too bad you can't really smell in space.
Thanks tho!

The concept of a polar bear diving into the ocean evokes power to me. Such a huge and majestic animal. I love the effect on the water/sky with the stars, kinda look like the bubbles that form when something big hits the water. Very powerful image.
