Description Wow, such a creative title! I've totally outdone myself this time. Alternative title would be "The Ancient TM". Think about it, how did people teach their Pokemon new moves when they didn't have the modern technology? They must've had scrolls like this.

Another painting in the Japanese painting style. This one is a little simpler than the one I did earlier. I've always found ancient scrolls fascinating and especially the ones that describe different techniques etc. When I got this idea I just had to do it - and with Mienshao because he's my favourite fighting type Pokemon and one of my favourites from the 5th gen. At first this didn't seem to come out as I wanted. Actually, it was pretty damn hard to draw those poses and make them fit Mienshao's anatomy. Now when I look at this I think it came out pretty much as I wanted.
Oh, and before anyone starts asking, the moves pictured in the scroll are some kung fu moves I found when I Google'd 'kung fu' so I'm not sure if they're actual kung fu moves. Google isn't too reliable. Well, at least they look like martial art moves and I think it's enough. Kung fu moves painted in a Japanese style is another issue...

Anyway, I hope you like it!
More of this style coming soon.

Sounds like a plan. Yes, I can understand people disliking fighting types since they tend to look like a bunch of wrestlers or overactive chinese karate-kids Most of their designs weren't that clever, it's a fact. Another one that's okay is Breloom. Fast, strong, and it doesn't look like a boxer at all xD I never got why Lucario was so popular, some say it's because his style looks like it's from gen1 but I'm not so convinced by that. The problem with an EV team in my opinion is that you only get to know its real strength in PvP games, the Pokémon franchise never really supported single-player high level areas (Mount Silver and Sky Pillar in Ruby and Sapphire are about the highest you can go as far as I know, but training guys from lvl 90 against monsters that barely hit 60 is just a too boring grind). Makes it pretty uninteresting for me since nobody plays multiplayer gen3 anymore ^^

What's your team going to consist of? *curious*

Breloom is pretty cool, too. I've never got to train one yet, I've planned to, though.
I have an explanation for Lucario's ridiculous popularity: a fighting type canine Pokemon who uses aura and looks like Anubis. I've never understood this huge popularity of canine like Pokemon or the huge urge to make every single Pokemon canine. I hate it when people say Absol or Eeveelutions, for example, are canines. Just...just no!
Griding to high levels is really slow and that's why I've never had a lvl 100 Pokemon, not a single one. My HG team is still in their low 90's but I haven't had any motivation to grind them lately. Challenging gym leaders and the E4 is good but it takes more time than just wandering around in a cave so in the end I don't know which method is more effective.

I haven't planned the team to be an ultimate team or anything, I've just picked some Pokemon I like and who would be nice to train. At the moment I have an Aggron, Honchkrow, Luxray, Kingdra and soon I'll get a Mienshao. I still don't know who the sixth member will be but I'd like it to be a Pokemon that could use fire type attacks.

Well, look on serebii.net for the better EV-trained builds (they give in-debt info for movesets, EVs needed, equipped items needed and general startegies during fights). I've just checked around a bit in the gen4 list (since the gen5 list only features one fire pokémon atm which is Emboar. Yuk.) and I'm afraid I've got some sad news for you: you'll have but a few decent options. Blaziken is pretty good as an offensive Pokémon in the UnderUsed class, Ho-Oh is a beast to abuse. You can go with Infernape, it's OverUsed class and as long as it doesn't take hits it's a monster (but it's one of the suckier monsters in terms of design). Camerupt can be used too, as a mix between offensive and defensive, but don't expect much of it. Final beasts (as a fire type): Charizard (but keep it away from Stealth Rock), Typloshion and Heatran (Heatran fights for the second place in Standard class, the other competers being Salamence and Gyarados).
Oh yes, and you can try Magmortar if you want to have something "different" (I don't know what about you, but I don't really like training the same Pokémon that everyone else is training. Guess why my lvl 100's have Pinsir, Raichu, Crobat and Exploud in there. Nobody uses them, but they can be surprisingly heavy).

A tip, if you want a ridiculously strong non-legendary Pokémon, use Garchomp. Everybody is afraid of that one and it got banned from Gen4's Uber class in competitive battling because it was deemed virtually uncounterable. Altough the review on Gen4 of it was only moderatley enthousiastic, later it turned out to be monstrous.

About the canine Pokémon, there's only 3 that are cool enough, being Arcanine, Houndoom and Mightyena. PERIOD! Stoutland? You gotta be kidding! I can imagine people thinking of Flareon to be canine, though. The other eevolutions, not that much, but Flareon has something of a furry dog over it. It's the paws, I think, and it's only mild.

I use that Serebii feature a lot, it's been pretty useful.
I don't necessarily want a fire type Pokemon, just a Pokemon that would complete my team and use one fire type attack. That would be enough. Typlosion is awesome but I don't have one in my White and I don't feel like putting one in my team this time. It's a good option but I'm looking for something else.
I've never liked Infernape. It's propably my least favourite starter. Well, it share's the last position with Emboar. I picked Chimchar once, just because fire types are so rare in 4th gen but I restarted the game soon with Turtwig just because I just didn't like that monkey.
Also, I'll never touch Magmortar. I don't care if it's a beast and a strong Pokemon, it's design is utterly hideous.

I know Garchomp is ridiculously strong but I don't want such a cheap Pokemon in my team. Besides, I'm not really planning to enter any competitive battles. I might challenge someone via Wi-fi some day but right now I just want to train a nice team.

Scoutland line is so...I don't know, I've never liked it.
I guess people think Eeveelutions are fennec foxes or something, Eevee does resemble one a little. I'd rather not think that these Pokemon resemble any animals, they're an original species, even if they bear some resemblance to real animals.

YaVaho155 In reply to ShadeofShinon [2011-07-18 13:33:07 +0000 UTC]

Yes, Eevee is a bit of a mix and match. I've thought of fennecs as well (especially due to Espeon and Umbreon) but there's simply not enough in it of 1 species to declare it as such. It's enigmatic.

I never said Magmortar to be a beast, he's just another option. Yes, overall fire types don't get a lot of love in competition. The idea of Magmar and a mortar shot sounded cool to me but, WHAT THE HELL DID THEY DO WITH HIS FACE?! Magmar wasn't a beauty or anything but they really killed him. It's the same with Rhyperior: take a cool Pokémon and make him shoot fucking cannon balls from his hands. Admit it, it sounds cool. How they could fuck them up that much is beyond me.

Anything that spits fire. Hmm, I believe most dragon types will work (with Altaria, Salamence and Dragonite specified). You could aslo use a fire hidden power (altough that's risky) or physical attackers with fire punch. Also a bit of an odd move, but surprisingly fun: Will-o-Wisp. Most ghosts know it (guess why I like it ) and with Hex in Gen5 it becomes a very nice setup move, not to mention it lowers target's attack.
If you prefer damage AND a guaranteed burn, opt for Inferno. Altough that's only fire types who can learn it (Litwick included). Watch out, highly powerfull, but 50 acc. and 5 PP...

Also, a select few like Manectric, Exploud and Granbull can learn Overheat.
Incinerate can be learned by many, but it's not very spectacular. Same story for Flamethrower, altough it's power seems to have raised to 95 now.
Zebstrika can learn Flame Charge. Manectric can learn Flame Burst (which can be handy in multi battles).
Fire Punch can be learned by many, including Alakazam, Medicham, Gengar, Ampharos, Electabuzz, Machamp and Dusclops.
Fire Fang is similar, being used by Arbok, Exploud, Hippodown, Garchomp, Aerodactyl, Steelix, Tyrannitar and many others.
Fire Blast can be TM-taught to a load of Pokémon as well: Nido's, Clefable, Wigglytuff, Golem, Muk (?).. The list is long.

Coming to think of it, why not use a Volcarono? You've seen first-hand that it's a beast and it has an awesome design (you said so yourself). I have yet to get one so I'm not sure of its strength, but you know what to expect
Hope I helped a bit with this quick research.

I know you didn't, I just wanted to make a point. I'd never use Magmortar, even if it was a beast, and just because it's hideous. And so is Rhyperior. And Electivire. Well, the latter is the least hideous of them but Electabuzz doesn't win any beauty contest anyway so nothing too damaging happened. Rhydon and Magmar were cool and I don't understand who accepted those 3rd stage designs. They would've been a lot better!

Dragons would be a good option. Too bad so many of them have quad weakness to Ice and I already have a dragon type. Salamence would be so cool, though. Chandelure would actually be a good idea. I forgot it's part fire type. I've never trained one but I have absolutely nothing against Chandelure family so I think I might've found teh sixth member. I'll keep looking for a while, though. :>

Overheat is a fun move. I keep forgetting Pokemon like Manectric can learn it.
Arbok with Fire Fang would be nice, too. I've always liked Arbok and a Poison type would be a nice addition. You keep mentioning Exploud and now I just can't ignore it. Despite the fact that I don't like it's two previous stages at all Exploud himself is pretty cool and not bad at all. I think I need to train one some day. Now I regret it that I didn't keep what's-her-face in my team in my Emerald Nuzlocke. Oh well.
Aerodactyl is a really cool Pokemon and I'd definitely want to raise one, too.

I've been thinking about Volcarona all the time. I absolutely love that Pokemon and it definitely is a beast. I just wanted to give other Pokemon a chance but looks like I'll just breed a Larvesta to complete the team.
I guess that's settled, then. Thanks for your help! :>

You're welcome. Chandelure grew kinda on me. In the beginning I only liked Litwick and hated it at the same time for being a Digimon rip-off (Candlemon), Lampent and Chandelure appeared as "lame" to me. The designs just grew on me, and their unique typing gives them something memorable, iconic if you will. Arbok was always nice, altough most people disliked it because it was shown as terribly weak in the series. Might train one of those as well. Well, if you just capture a Loudred at victory road you just need to train it one or two levels and you have an Exploud, but of course that ruins the EV-training aspect most of the time. I believe what's-her-face was called Birma or something like that? It started with a B and had I and A in it at least Whismur are just annoying to train since they evolve relatively late for a Gen3 3-stager (level 20, like Ralts) and it takes a while for them to become strong enough to really contribute to a team. Most people find a stronger Pokémon on the way and replace their Whismurs and Loudreds. No shame in that, you need the power, at times.
I remember laughing at people who trained Aerodactyls really hard to beat me, only to see them being butchered in a 0HKO whenever they challenged me. It's a cool Pokémon, that's for sure, but his typing... Well, then again, they switched him in on Blastoise or Kingdra or stuff like that, so they kinda deserved humiliation. I don't know what it is, but Aerodactyl had this status of "magical saviour" that's normally reserved to the more powerful legendaries. Too bad for those kids he never made it true

I'm glad I played an advisor part in your choice
If you're looking for a decent set, after quickly scouring the net I found the following:

name: Uber Offensive Dance
move 1: Butterfly Dance
move 2: Bug Buzz
move 3: Fire Blast/Flame Dance
move 4: Hidden Power[Rock]/Will-o-wisp
item: Life Orb/Lum Berry
nature: Timid/Modest
evs: 4 HP/ 252 SpA/ 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Straight forward offensive set to exploit its key pros. Butterfly Dance is the main focus on this set, boosting its already good Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed to high levels after a single usage. Bug Buzz is Volcarona's primary STAB move it Ubers, allowing to severely damage the varies Psychic and Dark types that lurk in the tier like Mewtwo, Wobbuffet, Tyranitar, Darkrai, Deoxys, and the Lati@s twins. Bug Buzz is also its strongest move against opposing Palkia and Kyogre. The choice between Fire Blast and Flame Dance is up to choice, Fire Blast is the preferred choice due to the higher base power allowing for an easier time KOing certain threats, but Flame Dance has better accuracy and a decent chance to boost Special Attack one stage at the cost of power. Hidden Power Rock is the final slot, being able to hit Rayquaza, Reshiram, and Ho-oh for decent damage, being able to 1HKO the former and 2HKO the two latters. Though Will-o-wisp could be used if you want to cripple certain switch-ins like Zekrom and Groudon.

There's some discussion about HP being Rock OR Electric. People switched to Electric in order to take out counters like Gyarados (which were common) so that can be a nice addition. Most people swear with Flame Dance as well, since it provides more power in the long run (and seen as Volcarona can sweep entire teams, that might be better). Note though that Flame Dance is Volcarona exculsive, he learns it at lvl 100.

This is gorgeous! I love your style so much.

You make me actually want to catch/evolve one, which is funny 'cause I never paid much attention to these guys in the game. x) But you made them look freakin' awesome. Might have to get one now.

Thank you!

I haven't trained a Mienshao before either but ever since I actually noticed this Pokemon I've been wanting to catch a Mienfoo and train it. :>
