A really neat technique! I had never heard of the masking liquid until now. Really makes me excited to work with watercolours more myself :0 Thank you for posting this!

It's a very handy medium to use with watercolours! I'd definitely recommend it. I hope the tutorial will be useful!

First of all, that was an epic drawing It's a leopard, right? You say you posted them on tumblr? I gotta go reblog them!

And, the one thing that I don't understand is, what is that green thing you use to delimitate the area you're going to cover with water color? You call it mask, but, is it some kind of paint, or something else? And how do you get rid of it afterwards, when you painted the basic colors?

Thank you! Yeah, I have done a couple of other space kitty pieces, slightly different from this, that I never posted anywhere but on Tumblr. You might have to do a bit of digging if you want to find them. :'>

The blue "outline" is the mask I applied. It's masking fluid, a rubber/silicone based medium that is commonly used with watercolours to cover the areas you don't want to get colour. It can be applied on blank paper or on a coat of paint that has already dried to protect it from another layer of paint. It scrubs off very easily and leaves no trace (unless something has gone wrong). You can scrub it off with your hands or use an eraser etc. Very handy and easy to use. It usually comes in bottles and since it's liquid you need some kind of brush (silicone brush is most recommended) to apply the masking fluid with, but there are also masking fluid pens which is what I used here.

I tried. I swear I tried. I went through your "archive" page, I tried searching as "tagged/space", "tagged/my-art" and "tagged/traditional" but still coudn't find them, do you have them clasified under some other tags? Sorry for my clumsiness.

And thank you very much for explaining the masking fluid thing to me, it was really nice to know about that.

It could be that they're so old that they aren't on my art blog but on my personal blog's old art tag. I think it's 'my old art' or something.
And no problem!

How did you achieve masking it?

I used a masking fluid pen! It's really handy and it's easy to mask more precise areas with it. The brand is Molotov and they have a couple different sizes in masking fluid pens. I also use bottled masking fluid (Winsor and Newton) and a silicon brush quite often, but in this one I used the masking fluid pen.

Then you used white ink over it to hide the mask? That's really cool stuff .o.

Oh, no the mask can be scrubbed off! It's rubber/silicone based and it comes off the paper very easily.

Mistä olet hei ostanut tuollaisia kyniä? =0 Kokeilin googlettaa, mutta löysin ainoastaan ulkomaisista kaupoista. Saako siis Suomesta jostain?
