Now this one was interesting. I don't think I have done anything like this before and yet I got this idea instantly. Palossand, a haunted sand castle. What could it possibly be? My first thought was "mimic octopus" and I didn't even need to justify it because it was so fitting, especially since my task was to do a Shiny Palossand. Octopus as a base would also make it possible for Palossand to get a castle-like form and in general octopus fits this "cursed, vitality draining creature" -theme very nicely. The movement of an octopus has the same fluid feel as sand does so I thought it would be very fitting in that aspect as well. In addition to that, the habitat is also very fitting as octopi are sea creatures and mimic octopus lives in shallow waters it wouldn't be unlikely to find them near beaches.
The shiny coloration comes from the black, volcanic sand found on Hawaii, which is very neat. I thought that Palossand would change its coloration according to the environment, to blend in better, very much like a mimic octopus does. It would also decorate its body with bits and pieces of coral and seashells. Its camouflage makes it easier for it to prey upon unsuspecting creatures or alternatively lure them closer so it can suck the life out of them.
It was very fun to work on this one!
I hope you like it!

Now this is what I imagine it would be like if HP Lovecraft designed a Pokemon.

You always put a lotta thought into these, but on this one you kicked it up to 11 the design definitely says octopus, and the lil bits of coral and seashells really give it the beach camo aspect

Thank you! Looking back I think I should've drawn just a bit of sand to make the camouflage aspect more prominent but I can add that later if I can be arsed to.

Damn that's creative. Definitely not a way I'd ever think to see Palossand. It's very unique and very cool. Amazing work!

4/10, not an unliving flesh-eating sandcastle with a radar-shovel on its head.
Don't get me wrong, you've made a pretty great monster design here and a Pokemon inspired by the mimic octopus is long overdue, I just can't accept this as a proper Pallosand. Why are you "realistic Pokemon" artists always so afraid to depict the more fantastical and whimsical concepts as they truly are? Let the gods be gods, let the objects be objects, let Ghost-types be supernatural entities of living darkness instead of just weird bats or invertebrates. LET POKEMON BE THE MAGICAL CREATURES THEY TRULY ARE. Are ghosts and fairies and living rocks *really* that more far-fetched than rodents that create lightning or fire-breathing lizards or animal-plant hybrids?
... Sorry, I have a lot of feelings about this subject.

I understand your point. I used to think like you for a long time. I disliked super realistic Pokemon art that seemed to make the designs totally different and just erase the basic essences of Pokemon. However, I feel like you're not completely understanding the point of why realistic Pokemon artists make the interpretations they do, so let me explain it, from my point of view. It is not to undermine the magical aspects of Pokemon in any way. On the contrary, I love the magic in them and I love creative designs that don't translate into actual living beings - and I would never want to erase that because that is what makes Pokemon what they are - but rather to take it as a challenge of how to best translate those essential qualities of Pokemon into a creature that could actually exist.
It isn't like drawing traditional fanart, no. It's more like creating derivative, alternative designs that are also fanworks at the same time. The reason why my thinking changed and why I am drawing Pokemon like this is that personally I feel like if I drew Pokemon in the cartoony style I wouldn't be doing much else than copying artwork that has already been created. By challenging myself and my creative and technical skills I try to create something new, work that looks like me, not like Ken Sugimori and the likes. Obviously his style isn't the only way to go, but the style I chose, the more realistic kind, I chose because it feels more natural to me. I am not expecting all people to appreciate my work, heck, even I don't always like it and I wish I could do more Pokemon fanart that isn't so realistic. I could say that I'm just hooked in the challenge. The thinking process and the research I do for each design makes me go deeper into the designs and into the concept of the Pokemon than when I just follow the original design.
You're absolutely right about the realism not always doing justice to the magic of Pokemon, but I think you're being too harsh on people who prefer realism, such as myself, because you don't agree with their ideas. I do not do this because I have an agenda or anything, I do it simply because I enjoy it and it keeps drawing Pokemon interesting for me. I have always loved drawing animals and creature design is my passion so this is what that path has led me to, I guess. Maybe at some point I will shift back a little, take a more loose approach on drawing Pokemon for a change. But the point of this very series this Palossand piece belongs to is to create believable creatures. And if you really looked at creatures that exist, they are pretty damn incredible as well. Not magical, but real creatures that actually have abilities that seem out of this world.
I'm afraid that you screaming "LET POKEMON BE THE MAGICAL CREATURES THEY TRULY ARE." at artists who draw realistic Pokemon does no good to anyone. If you don't like it you have the option to not look at it. The fact that realistic pieces of Pokemon exist doesn't mean that those Pokemon will now be forever changed. It doesn't take those designs away from you. Let the artists do what they love when it doesn't hurt anyone.
I hope you have a great day!

Sick. I love octopi/squids, and you totally nailed the look. The eyes and crest really give it that sinister appeal.
Fun octo-fact: Giant pacific octopi will decorate the area outside their nests with the shells of crustaceans and bivalves they've eaten. I can totally picture a Palossand doing the same thing to either lure in unwary critters or attract a mate.

I was never terribly interested in the official design, but seeing Palossand like this really makes me want to see it strut its stuff on the battle front. Or a contest. This would make a really cool contest Pokemon.

That's nice to hear! Always a pleasure to show some Pokemon in a different, perhaps more appealing light.
From what I know Palossand isn't too shabby so it might make a good battle front pokemon!
