Fortnite Battle Royale is a free-to-play battle royale video game developed and published by Epic Games . It was released as an early access game for Microsoft Windows , macOS , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in September 2017, and for iOS , Nintendo Switch , and Android in 2018. It is a spin-off from Epic's Fortnite: Save the World , a cooperative survival game with construction elements.
As a battle royale game, Fortnite Battle Royale features up to a hundred players, either alone, in duos, or in squads of up to four players, attempting to be the last player or group alive by killing other players or evading them, while staying within a constantly shrinking safe zone to prevent taking lethal damage from being outside it. Players start with no intrinsic advantages, and must scavenge for weapons and armor to gain the upper hand on their opponents. The game adds the construction element from Fortnite; players can break down most objects in the game world to gain resources they can use to build fortifications as part of their strategy. Limited-time modes are cycled through the game that introduce experimental or unconventional gameplay but otherwise follow the battle royale "last player standing" goal. While the game world remains the same for all matches, Epic presents a seasonal approach that may make small or major changes to the game world, including simultaneous single-time events that occur on all game servers. The game features cross-platform play between the platforms that was limited for the first five seasons, before the restrictions were eased.
The idea for Fortnite Battle Royale arose following the release of the similar battle royale game PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds , which saw numerous player count records broken throughout 2017. Seeing its rapid growth and commercial success, Epic Games saw the opportunity to create a battle royale mode of their own. Originally released as part of the paid Fortnite game, Epic spun out a dedicated version of the game offered as free-to-play funded by microtransactions , sharing in-game currency with the main Fortnite game, allowing players to buy or earn cosmetic items to customize their character, as well as completing challenges through a battle pass to earn additional rewards. As of November 2018, the game has seen over 200 million players, and has been estimated to have earned more than US$1 billion in microtransactions. Fortnite Battle Royale has become a cultural phenomenon, with streams of the game achieving record-high viewerships, and with several high-profile celebrities stating their appreciation of the game.

A battle royale game, also spelled battle royal, is a video game genre that blends the survival, exploration and scavenging elements of a survival game with last-man-standing gameplay. Battle royale games challenge a large number of players, starting with minimal equipment, to search for weapons and armor and eliminate all other opponents while avoiding being trapped outside of a shrinking "safe area", with the winner being the last competitor in the game. The name for the genre is taken from the 2000 Japanese film Battle Royale , which presents a similar theme of a last-man-standing competition in a shrinking play zone.[1] [2]
The genre's origins arose from mods for large-scale online survival games like Minecraft and ARMA 2 , before becoming popularized with standalone games such as PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds , which had sold over 50 million copies by June 2018. The same year, the free-to-play Fortnite Battle Royale rapidly became a cultural phenomenon, overtaking Battlegrounds in terms of player numbers and revenue.[3] [4] [5] [6] [7]

H1Z1 is a free-to-play battle royale game developed and published by Daybreak Game Company . The game's development began after the original H1Z1 was spun off into two separate projects in early 2016: H1Z1: Just Survive and H1Z1: King of the Kill.[1] [2] The games were further split as separate projects in October 2017, with Just Survive dropping the H1Z1 name, and King of the Kill becoming simply H1Z1.[3]
After three years of being in early access for Microsoft Windows , H1Z1 officially released as a free-to-play game in February 2018.[4] It was later released for the PlayStation 4 in August 2018, and will be released for the Xbox One at a later date.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is an online multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by PUBG Corporation , a subsidiary of South Korean video game company Bluehole . The game is based on previous mods that were created by Brendan "PlayerUnknown" Greene for other games using the film Battle Royale for inspiration, and expanded into a standalone game under Greene's creative direction. In the game, up to one hundred players parachute onto an island and scavenge for weapons and equipment to kill others while avoiding getting killed themselves. The available safe area of the game's map decreases in size over time, directing surviving players into tighter areas to force encounters. The last player or team standing wins the round.
The game was first released for Microsoft Windows via Steam 's early access beta program in March 2017, with a full release on December 20, 2017. That same month, the game was released by Microsoft Studios for the Xbox One via its Xbox Game Preview program, and officially released in September 2018. The same year, a port for the PlayStation 4 was released, in addition to two different mobile versions for Android and iOS . The game is one of the best-selling of all time , with over fifty million sold across all platforms by June 2018. In addition, the Windows version holds a peak concurrent player count of over three million on Steam, which is an all-time high on the platform.
Battlegrounds received positive reviews from critics, who found that while the game still was not fully finished and had some technical flaws, it presented new types of gameplay that could be easily approached by players of any skill level and was highly replayable. The game received several Game of the Year nominations among other accolades, and is considered by Greene to be the defining game of the battle royale genre. Several other video games, following in Battlegrounds's success, added battle royale-style modes, while a number of clones , primarily out of China, also appeared. PUBG Corporation has run several small tournaments and introduced in-game tools to help with broadcasting the game to spectators, as they wish for it to become a popular esport .

Five Nights at Freddy's (often abbreviated to FNaF) is a media franchise based around an indie video game series created, designed, developed, and published by Scott Cawthon for Microsoft Windows , iOS , and Android .
The series is centered on the story of a fictional restaurant named Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, a pastiche of restaurants such as Chuck E. Cheese's and ShowBiz Pizza Place . The first three games involve the player working as a nighttime security guard : they must utilize several tools, most notably checking security cameras , to survive against animatronic characters, which become mobile and homicidal after hours. The fourth game, which uses different gameplay mechanics from its predecessors, takes place in the house of a child who must defend against nightmarish versions of the animatronics by closing doors and fleeing on foot. The fifth game takes place in a maintenance facility owned by a sister company of Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The player character is a technician instead of a night guard, who must do different tasks each night as told by an AI voice heard in the game. In the sixth game, the player acts as the owner of a pizzeria which they must decorate with payable items, and must also work the night shift for their pizzeria, which plays similarly to previous games.
The series has gained widespread popularity since its release. Three novel adaptations, Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes , Five Nights at Freddy's: The Twisted Ones, and Five Nights at Freddy's: The Fourth Closet, were released in 2015, 2017, and 2018, respectively. A guidebook for the series, Five Nights at Freddy's: The Freddy Files, was released on August 29, 2017, with an activity book titled Five Nights at Freddy's: Survival Logbook being released on December 26, 2017. A film adaptation is currently in the works.
A horror attraction based on the series was featured in the Adventuredome in Halloween of 2016. Additionally, the series appeared in the Guinness Book of Records: Gamer's Edition , breaking the record for the largest number of sequels released in a year.[1]

Watch Dogs (stylized as WATCH_DOGS) is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft . It was released worldwide on May 27, 2014 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 3 , PlayStation 4 , Xbox 360 , and Xbox One . A Wii U version was released in November 2014. Set in a fictionalized, free-roam , open world version of Chicago , the single-player story follows hacker Aiden Pearce's search for revenge after the killing of his niece. The game is played from a third-person perspective , and the world is navigated on foot or by vehicle. An online multiplayer mode allows up to eight players to engage in cooperative and competitive gameplay.
Development of the game began in 2009, and continued for over five years. Duties were shared by many of Ubisoft's studios worldwide, with more than a thousand people involved. The developers visited Chicago to conduct field research on the setting, and used regional language for authenticity. Hacking features were created in consultation with the cyber-security company Kaspersky Lab , and the in-game control system was based on SCADA . The score was composed by Brian Reitzell , who infused it with krautrock .
Following its announcement in June 2012, Watch Dogs was widely anticipated. Upon release, it received a mixed reception; praise was directed at the game's hacking elements and mission variety, while criticism was expressed concerning the discrepancy in graphics quality between marketing and the real game, plot, and protagonist. Watch Dogs was a commercial success, breaking the record for the biggest first-day sales of a Ubisoft game and becoming the biggest launch of a new intellectual property in the United Kingdom at the time. The game has shipped over 10 million copies; its sequel, Watch Dogs 2 , was released in November 2016.
