Honestly the process was pure genius, no shock as I was the developer, but in this case it also included a certain level of, shall we say, poetry?

Each subject was simply drugged, abducted and placed into the featureless room with simply a chair, table and computerized chess set. Slowly, the compulsion to play, reinforced by the room's lighting and subsonic subliminals, would win out and cause them to start a simple game.

Depending on the skill and intelligence of the player, they would often win, sometimes even beginning a modest streak of victories. But with each move, each strategy they showed the AI powering the set, they told it more and more about herself until slowly it adapted to their style of play and the tide began to turn.

The games would get closer and closer, the AI began to always feel one or two moves ahead. Unbeknownst to them, the AI, the drugs, the subliminals all served to begin to turn their own subconscious against themselves as they slowly but surely began to the mental prison forming.

As their minds became cloudier, their conscious thoughts slowly receding, they were entirely powerless. By this point, they were playing against themselves, losing as their own minds had turned against them. Their thoughts, the patterns on the board, all of it building the pressure to submit.

While some took longer than others, the final game would always play out the same. A stone faced and empty attempt to struggle as it began, but slowly and surely each would realize not only were they going to lose, they wanted it. They wanted to submit, wanted to surrender and sure enough… I would hear words and know I had taken a Queen.

“Checkmate…” “Command me…” “I will obey…”
