Yikes. That's a really standout piece!

I really love Puffins. They're such vibrant birds. Plus they're powerful flyers and swimmers to boot!

You really to have quite a hand for photography.
Keep up the wonderful work!

thank you, its one of my most popular shots on DA ^-^ I lvoe puffins too, you cannot go wrong with taking pictures of them either. I always love watching the males 'fight', which in puffins means fencing lightly with their beaks!

This year I'm living an hour away from a puffin colony in scotland, so come summer time I'm definatly goign to be out there, trying to get more good shots of them

Well with good reason. It's really beautiful.

I've never observed them in the wild. They must be a treat to behold.

Ah. You're living in Scotland? I'm kinda jealous.
I fell in love with the country a bit when I visited years ago.
It's such a picturesque place.

I hope you have the best of luck when you do travel out to take snapshots of the puffins!

Very, very nice! What equipment did you use?

I used a Nikon D200 with a very big lens the friend I was shooting with that day lent my for the shot, was at least capable of 500mm focal length but I can't remeber the exact spec. of the lens I'm afraid!

I normally shoot with a 70-200mm F2.8 with a teleconverter to double the range but this puffin was too far away for my lens!

sebastopolgoose In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2009-12-27 03:36:31 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... shame... sounds like a very big lens indeed! Are they wild or captive?

Nice equipment! If I were ever to be a Nikon user, the 70-200 would be near the top of my purchase list

They are wild birds, this was taken on one of their breeding colonies on an island off the coast of the UK. I don't think that there are any puffins in zoos anywhere, but I could be wrong.

And thanks! I love my camera and lens, beside it being very good equipment we've been through a lot together and it's not packed in just yet!

Cool! I love puffins, although I've never seen any real ones yet. I wonder if there are any in zoos...

hmmm a quick google search reveals that St louis zoo has tuffted and horned puffins... and the central park zoo has tufted ones as well but no where appears to have atlantic puffins like the ones in this shot... how strange.

I also live near one, on the isle of may in scotland, and I'll definatly be out there come summer time ^-^

I suppose we're a couple of hours or more from the north of Cardigan Bay (road links are AWFUL between North and South Wales) - I've been down as far as Barmouth (years ago) - and we saw whales out at sea. But I haven't visited there since I was about ten!

ah thats too bad... there are some great birds up in the north of the uk. I am lucky enough to currently live only an hour away from a really big puffin colony (Isle of May, Scotland) so come summer time I will head out there to see all the breeding sea birds. Mebbe you will get another chance in the future? I hope so

thank you very much I really wanted to get a classic 'beakful of fish' shot but it took me all day to finally get one I was happy with! Normally when they have got fish they fly straight into their burrows to give them to their young so they don't get attacked and robbed by seagulls that hang around the colony. I hope that you will get to see them someday, they are a beautiful sight.

That sounds awesome. I would love to see them one day. I went to Nova Scotia for a day and they an island called Puffin Island, I was really excited to see them, but unfortunately it was so foggy out I couldn't see anything. But I did see a little island called Seagull Island and it was packed big time.
I'm gonna catch them one day with my camera.
