Description **EDIT 14.10.12** ok made changes to the lineart based on ~ExquisiteGraceDesign and *RejectAll-American 's feedback (thanks very much guys!) and then finished the colours and shaded it. I'm going to say that this is finished now, but any feedback would be very welcome for future horse drawing attempts

soooo while I only ever upload dragons and gryphons and various other made up beasties here on DA, I have been trying to learn how to draw other stuff, especially horses...

this is a WIP, any comments on the anatomy/poses etc would be appreciated before I try and colour them properly (y'know, so I can learn stuff and improve). No crit on the colours though, they are bad and blocky and are only there because I don't like uploading lineart only stuff

they are both drawn from reference photos, BUT before I link to them... if anyone can guess what breeds they are you win a doodle of a character of your choice (of your character, favourite fan character, whatever). 1st correct guesses in the comments wins!

HAPPY GUESSING

**EDIT**
*RejectAll-American got both breeds! so she wins the doodle... and here it is! [link]

the breeds and stock photos are...

Friesian, from this ace stock photo by ~GreenEyezz-stock here [link]
Suffolk punch, which is drawn from one of my own shots [link]

If you like my work and have some spare points lying around, I do 100 point commissions! I you are interested in ordering one please see this journal: [link]

You drew horsehs Looks awesome. Hoofs are the most darn-blasted things to draw

I tried in my own 'special' way have quite a way to go to get anywhere near your level of equine awesomeness though

have another one to draw now, *RejectAll-American 's request is a horse too!

Hey there! I don't know of you're still interested in some critique, but in case you are, here's my two cents.

This doesn't look bad at all considering that you don't really draw horses. As previously mentioned, the hooves do look a bit wobbly- Try thinking of them as "rounded boxes." Looking at references of just hooves can be a big help; here are a couple different angles that I personally find useful:
[link]
That particular picture also with help with your fetlocks- the dip between the pastern joint and the hoof. While you back legs look good, the front hardly have fetlocks at all. Here's a decent reference of just that particular area:
[link]
Now, naturally, in a curved state they are not going to be as long as the above picture, but again, references always help. For this particular pose, I would look at photos of some jumping horses, who have similar up movement to this.
[link]

Next, I'd like to mention the chest/neck area. On the orange/flaxen horse, your chest is a little bit too short/narrow to fit the thick neck/larger head, causing the front legs too look a little too long. Here are some reference photos of horses with similar arched necks:

Other than that, this really looks good! Horses are hard creatures to draw, but you're very well on your way! I hope this helps!

wow thanks so much for all the feedback! It is a really big help, I really appreciate it

I'm going to work on the lines this weekend and hopefully properly colour/shade it, so I am definatly still interested in crit

Will definatly redo the hooves, and now you've pulled it up the chest does look too thin, he's meant to be a draught horse breed so should be far thicker. Thats what I love about other people giving you crit, you've spent so long looking at the lines while you're working on them you can't properly 'see' the proportions anymore >.< well thats what I find anyway!

thanks for all the kind words, I adore horses and have lived around them/riden for most of my life but have never really tried drawing them... thought I'd give it a go and give the mythical RP stuff a rest

thanks again

No problem! It's always nice to see someone who WANTS an actual critique, and not just "oh this looks awesome!" comments.

By the way, are they Friesian and Belgian?

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to RejectAll-American [2012-10-12 02:12:20 +0000 UTC]

I really appreciate it, I give crit on photography (which is definatly my main strength) so I know it takes time and thought to do give proper, helpful feedback, so thank you!

hehe you got the black one right and are close on the other! Belgians do look almost exactly the same, right down to the chesnut/flaxen mane combo... I guess thinking about it the flaxen one is pretty hard, even if they are one of my fav breeds that I see all the time, they aren't too common or well known outside of the UK >.<

but there isn't a limit on guess tries if you want to guess again

Haha definitely! I try to critique as much as I can but so many of the people who "want" it don't REALLY want it.

Hurm... A Suffolk perhaps? That's the only breed I can think of that is nearly a spitting image of the Belgian, but they're not too common here so I've only seen pictures!

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to RejectAll-American [2012-10-12 02:32:02 +0000 UTC]

I know right... **sigh** it almost makes you nervous to give people feedback incase all they really want to hear is **you are AMAZING and everything you do is PERFECT!!!** and then get snarky at you for giving honest feedback that might help them...

yes that is the breed! hehe they aren't too common anywhere, they are a critically threatened breed but are doing a little better in recent years with more interest in them and people breeding them

At my parent's house the nextdoor neighboors breed them, so throughout high school I had suffolks around me! One of their mares actually foaled on one of the nights I was babysitting their kids And there is a stud nearby, so I get to see all the lovely stallions and foals too. The pose in this pic is from one of my own photos from there [link]

So you win a doodle! Just name (and link to) your character

RejectAll-American In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2012-10-12 02:42:04 +0000 UTC]

Ha, yeah. Especially the ones who open the critique option and then reply with how your critique cannot *possibly* hold any weight.

Oh wow! Lucky lucky, I WISH we had more stud farms around here that bred drafts. I work on a dude ranch, and we collect draft horses, but there aren't any really nice breeding farms around that breed drafts. It's really reassuring to hear that they're doing better in the UK though, I knew they were endangered but hadn't really been able to find any info other than that. The pictures of the babies you have are so adorable, especially little mister "won't eat my greens!"

Would you be willing to do my Bounce?

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to RejectAll-American [2012-10-12 02:55:25 +0000 UTC]

hehe thanks! draft foals are hilarious and sweet, its hard to go wrong photographing them

wow you work on a ranch! That sounds ace, although I bet its hard work. Yeah they are doing a lot better these days, they have about 30 foals a year and the numbers are slowly but surely on the increase

I would love to draw Bounce! hehe you of course already know that I'm still learning to draw horse anatomy... but I will do my best to do her justice! she has a fantastic design, buckskin is an ace coat colour and I really like that just the mane/tail tips are an 'unatural' colour, as oppose to the whole mane/tail

RejectAll-American In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2012-10-14 22:14:17 +0000 UTC]

We have two draft babies on the ranch right now and they are the most adorable things ever! The little girl (who isn't so little) tries to race the feed truck.

Haha it's hard work, but it hardly seems like it because I'm such a horse lover. It only starts sounding hard when I describe it to other people and they're like uhhhhh.... how are you walking around still?? We should start breeding them, I bet the guests would love them!

Aww, thanks! I personally think your anatomy is really good considering you don't do them often!

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to RejectAll-American [2012-10-17 21:32:40 +0000 UTC]

awww that sounds adorable! hehe yeah breeding them would be great, but then what do you do with them once they are grown up! I know thats a problem some stables have when they breed them.

Yeah I have the same thing about describing my job, I work with whales/dolphins/seals and its really hard work, but I love it so it doesn't matter

here is your Bounce pic, hope you like it! [link]

Haha well, we run trail rides, so we are ALWAYS in need of big draft horses! We do wagon rides (and a couple of our wagon horses are getting up there in age), rodeo flags, and of course, they carry the... plump... visitors. Right now we have four clydesdales (two of which are mommies now!), two belgians, two percherons, a Barbant (our stud), and a whole series of draft mixes! We collect them.

That's so cool! I wish we had more sea animal attractions around here, but the closest place is like six hours away.

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to RejectAll-American [2012-10-24 13:52:23 +0000 UTC]

wow I would be sad being so far away from the sea! I've lived almost my whole life close to it.

clydesdales are so amazing, I live in scotland at the mo so those are the breed of horse I currently see the most often! hehe I've never really considered riding a draft, although I know it can be done. Aren't they way too strong to control? Or are they really good natured so that's not a problem?

RejectAll-American In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2012-10-24 20:23:30 +0000 UTC]

I've actually never been to the sea. Lake, yes, sea, no. ;-;

They're really just like any other horse. They can be rude some days, nice others. The majority of them are gentle giants though!

ExquisiteGraceDesign [2012-10-10 16:53:42 +0000 UTC]

Not to bad for a simple linart The biggest critique I have is for the hooves, they are rather wobbly (not sure what else to call them) and kinda make it look like the horses foundered. I would just go in there and straited then up a bit

Good luck with the drawing

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to ExquisiteGraceDesign [2012-10-10 23:34:25 +0000 UTC]

thanks very much! For the advice, the luck and the compliment I will redo the hooves, I find them a bit hard as in a lot of ref photos they are covered up by the ground/grass >.<

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ExquisiteGraceDesign In reply to Shadow-and-Flame-86 [2012-10-11 17:47:12 +0000 UTC]

No problem Yeah that can be a bit of a problem, I would try finding some where you can see them really well and draw them from that, after awhile it will become easier to draw them without a ref when they are covered up

Shadow-and-Flame-86 In reply to ExquisiteGraceDesign [2012-10-12 02:13:04 +0000 UTC]

yeah I will have a look through my photos and try and find some like that... and if not then I'm sure DA's stock will oblige me

hehe thanks for guessing! I'm afraid that while one of those guesses is right for one of the horses, none of them are right for the other and you need to guess both to win you can guess again though if you think of any other breeds

ok the point really for this game was to have just two guesses each time and get the breeds right rather than 'list all the breeds you know and hope the right ones are in there'!

because that kind of removes the fun of thinking about the features of the horses and trying to deduce which breed it cooresponds to
