Well, gypsum's a mineral and a pretty common one at that. Only has a hardness of 2, so it's soft(as minerals go). It's used for a wide variety of purposes. For more information I will direct you to Wikipedia .
I a geologist phase when I was 10 but it passed a long time a ago. For good or evil, I had gotten my grandmother hooked on it and now she/I has an extensive rock collection. Mostly, I just like to photograph them

It's amazing how many common rocks and minerals are used in things so complex and advanced when you can (literally!) find them in your backyard
