"That should do it," you said, snapping Dorian's chest plate back in place. "Try not to take any more bullets until Rudy gets back, okay?" You smiled, "He's a little bit better at this than I am."
Dorian smiled back at you, "I'll do my best."
"When will Rudy be back?" John asked, checking his phone.
"Next Wednesday," You responded, carrying your tools back to the workbench where you'd temporarily set up shop. "I guess he just couldn't tear himself away from the butterbots."
Kennex looked at you as if you'd been speaking Greek, "The what?"
You shrugged, smiling sheepishly, "Robotic butterflies."
Rudy had been away at a Mechanical Technicians Conference for the last week, giving you the opportunity to temporarily fill in for your friend while simultaneously getting your hands dirty playing with the latest model of MX. The temporary job also offered you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the only DRN cleared for duty on the police force. And perhaps also with his partner.
You shook your head to dispel the thought, a small smile crossing your lips at just how ridiculous it was. Rudy had told some of what Kennex was like, about the PTSD and the trauma-onset OCD, but of course he'd left out a physical description.
You had to consciously restrain yourself from licking your lips as you admired the detective over Dorian's shoulder. The black long-sleeve shirt he always seemed to be wearing was tight across his chest, showing off the impressive muscle groups of the detective's upper body. The black cargo pants that hugged his well-formed legs had been half-tucked into black combat boots that could use a shine. Overall, John Kennex's appearance was relaxed compared to that of the other detectives'. On him, the department regulation garments appeared casual. Confidence and calm eased from the man, like he'd taken all of the bad things that had happened to him, all the things he'd seen, and shoved them into a corner to process later.
Dorian's display flashed and he turned to his partner, "John, Captain Maldonado wishes to speak with us."
Kennex nodded, "Alright. Tell her we'll be right there."
Dorian's display flashed again as he nodded, standing.
John turned towards the door, preparing to leave.
"John, wait!" The man paused, turning back towards you.
"I mean, uh-Detective Kennex," You flushed, grabbing something off your workbench and offering it to the detective.
He took the shiny object, a hint of confusion in his hazel eyes, "Uhhh... thanks."
"It's a sight for your pistol. I re-calibrated the targeting mechanism in the lazer sight to make it more accurate and added a shock absorber to soften the recoil." You smiled at him as he nodded.
"Thank you, (Y/n)." He smiled, "I'm sure it will come in handy."
"Anytime, Detective." You beamed at the expression of gratitude before motioning towards the door. "You should probably get going, the Captain will wonder what kept you."
John paused a moment before smiling, as if your words had snapped him out of some kind of trance. "Right, uh-" he held up the sight you'd handed to him, "Thanks again."
With that, he disappeared out the door, Dorian following him. You turned back to your workbench, sorting through the materials you'd used to repair Kennex's DRN and trying to suppress the smile that had plastered itself to your face at the words of a certain detective.
