If you're using this for practice I would suggest trying out a much darker background to start out with, that way when you refine in your lighting you use ever lighter tones of color.
The idea is to get a consistent, even shadow tone and effectively 'light' the scene. There are cases where you would want to draw shadows in, but that should be the exception rather than the rule

yah. It was kinda wierd actually, it started out as a more battletech-ish mech about 0730hrs this morning and by about 0930 it had evolved into this!
