Description For Drawing 100, we got to take inspiration from Dr. Seuss or DaVinci and create a bizarre machine of our own. So I tried my hand at making a robotic creature that patrols the field in search of fugitives.

I made it with Newsprint and charcoal, so please tell me what you guys think! I'd love to know what I can do to improve :3

Very odd looking thingy...

Like stranded from an unreal dimension made and or compose out of nightmares in a way, like if it was forced to live on a dark shattered place following its own path... Yet you see it in search or collecting alike, sorta speak it gives an atmosphere of suspense due of how strange would be for this creature to cross paths with a person, like what would it do once someone is stranded in the same way and both find each ones path? It will react hostile? Like another aberration claiming for reckless bloodlust on a trial of wilderness? Or may it be friendly? Maybe even docile perhaps?

Is the kind of questions you go wonderin onto this kind of abstract pieces if it represents something about good and evil due of the true intentions of the artist while plasmming its creation over the canvas... Or... Isn't?Β  Β  :v

I never thought of anything like that, but I love the ideas!! I just thought of it as a weird Orwellian monster that tracks down fugitives and trespassers, but I do like the concept of it being forced to live in in that area and has to make sense of what to do. It's somehow just as dystopian, and I love it :3

Yes! It reminds me to creepy old H. P. tales, in a way since most of the creatures you can tell are forced due of thier condition or what not.

Hello there.
I am from ProjectComment , but I am also here for being intrigued by the description. Dr. Seuss or Leonardo? Now that is a pick I just had to see!

First, however, as others have mentioned the lighting does have problems. It is not apparent how many light sources there are, nor exactly from where the light is coming from. The hills seem to be lit from behind, as do the head and the prominent forelimb, but the body and its shadow indicate the light is coming from straight above. The tentacles on the back seem lit from the front.
If you have a lot of light sources in a scene, would recommend that you draw their position and direction in your sketches - but you seem to have a firm idea of basic shading already, so my apologies if you already do. It may also be an idea that you rank their intensity: It is very rarely all light in an environment is equally bright.

For the style, I am not very familiar with the whole work of Dr. Seuss, so some aspects may not be apparent. But from what I know, would say you have succeeded in capturing the style; the head with the glaring eye and the stick figure captive show it especially well.

If the mention of Dr. Seuss was not sufficient, the large rivets and fang-like radiator grille convey beyond a doubt this is a robot that belongs in the world of cartoons, and is not bound by engineering principles. Still, some parts of the design are unclear, such as its gait. While it has six legs, with the forelegs close together and the knees turned inward, and the hindlegs spaced far apart, it seems unlikely to be capable of walking as an insect. But in context, perhaps this is a good thing: It adds to the overall menace of the creature that it is unclear how it carries out its duty. Perhaps the legs are static and it slides weightless across the ground? A terrifying sight!

On a side note, if you have the chance, do look up the notebooks of Leonardo: There is a published version which features his thoughts on creature design - you may find it useful.

Thank you so much! Yeah I really didn't know where the lighting was going to be coming from except that it was moonlight, so my lighting is very off in this piece. I also really didn't have any idea of how the thing would move, I just liked making its legs look weird and unsettling :3

And thank you for all the compliments! That means a lot I'll try to get better at the shading and lighting as well as the posing!

Most welcome <3 Glad to hear something useful came across. And for this kind of creature, weird and unsettling is as good a design principle as another.

If you have not already, please consider submitting this to The-Dark-Arts . Think it would be quite the welcome addition.

This is quite an intriguing art piece in the sense that it's very unique, original, and eye-catching.

Your use of shading pleases my eyes very much, and I can't help but wonder what materials you used; though some may call your shading inconsistent and maybe even rough in places, I think that style really works for this drawing, accentuating the dismal, yet bizarre world that the robotic creature exists in. I also applaud you on the highlights you give the robotic creature and the grass--those are all spot on, in my opinion, and go well with the style of the art work.

At the same time, I am a little concerned about the shadows your robotic creature has; only some of the tentacles/robotic arms have shadows projected onto the ground, and I think that could be an area of improvement on your part--working on creating more realistic, accurate shadows. However, is that purposeful on your part, to make the robotic creature even more unworldly and fanciful by revealing that some parts of it don't quite exist? If so, then that is as awesome as Doritos! (Sorry, if you don't like Doritos, but that's a compliment.Β Β Β )Β

Possibly, the art piece could have looked even more aesthetically pleasing if the background was darker, thus bringing more attention to the star of the art piece: the robotic creature. But, that's really just my opinion. I've always been into extremely dramatic shading.

Maybe, since the robotic creature patrols the field in search of fugitives, you could have made more effort to make the machine look more hostile and vicious, ready to annihilate anything in its path, or even just cold, ruthless, deadly, and lying in wait of "prey". (Wooo, that was straying a little to the dark side.) You could have achieved this look with more heavy plating, weaponry, claw-legs,etc; at that point of criticism, I have to say that I love the robotic creature the way it is, and don't change this abstract beauty for anything!

ALL THUMBS UP FOR THE OBSERVER!Β

Aww thanks man! ;3; that means a lot to me! I honestly have no idea how to do shading, but I do understand what you mean about the inconsistent shading, that is something I really need to work on. I would love to try again at this piece and make the mech more dynamic in posing and shading, but I want to wait and see if my Drawing II helps me with that

Once again, thank you 1000 times!!!!!
