Description The cold rain washed down her face in tiny streamlets, mingling with the hot tears on her cheeks. The wetness dripped off her chin, sparkling in the dull red of the sunset burning through the clouds on the horizon.
Soma threw one last hopeless glance over her shoulder at the world she was leaving behind. Clutching her thin coat tighter around her shoulders, she trudged on through the mud and rain. The wind whipped at her like wet knives on her face, making it sting until she was numb.
The shivers soon shook her to her knees. Nothing she could do would bring her back to her feet. Sorrow tore at her stomach, and from the wound bled the blood of love, the blood of happiness, the blood of hope. Hope that she would ever again feel the tingle of love warm her heart.
As she lay there in the cold mud, which sapped her of her consciousness, the rain petered out and the purple clouds began to clear. With a gasp of suffering, Soma opened her eyes as the moon appeared from behind the clouds, brightening the spot where she lay.
Soma's limbs were stiff from fatigue and cold. There was no hope, there was no hope, she told herself, her jagged sobbing whispers punctuating the silence of the hills. She threw her head to the heavens with a yell of fury – "Why?!" she called, expecting no answer. The single desperate word echoed through the valley, until there was silence.
She closed her eyes and let one last tear roll out of her eye. She could feel the starlight sparkling on her skin – or was that the caressing fingers of her misery?
"Soma." She heard the low whisper in her ear, but was too scared to ask herself if it was a dream that would end in a nightmare.
A pair of warm, gentle arms wrapped themselves around her. She knew those arms, the familiar smell, but still she could not open her eyes. Soma was lifted from the muck, and held tight against the chest of her lover. She rested her tired head against his heart, and listened to his life beat through his body as she was carried home.
"Please don't leave me," she whispered. No answer came, only a kiss on the forehead. But it was enough.
