Description
I caught my breath and looked up at the person who had said my name. I saw her face, and a single cold drop of recognition fell into my essence, seeping through my body all the way to the tips of my fingers.
The woman’s cheeks were full, the light illuminating her skin to accentuate their roundness. Her nose was not quite straight, but it held its place on her face as if it knew it were made for her and no one else.
Her lips were straight and thin, almost as pale as her skin. They were parted slightly, ready to speak again.
Lastly, I saw her eyes. They were large and round in hopeful excitement. The shade of blue they were was bright and shining, yet shadowed as if her deepest secrets were nestled within them.
Once again she spoke my name in barely a whisper. I could see straight through her sheltered gaze that she was hoping against hope that I was the one she had been searching for.
I couldn’t have helped but to look into her stunning eyes, so by then I knew everything about her. I winced away, seeing her memories flashing painfully through my head.
“Is that you?” she asked breathlessly. The simple question dove deep into me like a knife. I knew exactly what she meant. We had never met before, but in the sensitive way she spoke to me it seemed like she knew me. I was not accustomed to being spoken to so personally.
I nodded once, looking at the ground. I could feel the woman’s emotions teeming in the air around her without even looking up into her face.
I had been shivering for a few minutes without realizing, but when I felt her warm hand placed tenderly on my shoulder, her heat spread deeply throughout my body.
“We have to go,” she murmured, standing up straight. I felt some strange power draw me upwards with her, making my heart skip a beat. I knew that my legs had lost their strength hours before. But I could not resist the alien power pushing me forward, so I walked.
I tried to stop my eyes from glazing over, but with the next slow step I took, I began to feel a stream of hot tears pour down my cold cheeks. I did not care any longer where I was going, I just let the borrowed strength control me.
I was minutely aware sitting in a car with darkened windows and speeding away. I let myself sway with the curves of the road. The tears never stopped, not the whole time I was awake.
At some time during the ride, the woman turned around in her seat and reached out to feel the pulse on my neck. She pressed two warm fingers into my skin and opened one of my eyes. She had been making sure I hadn’t given up on life.
Frantically and in a daze, I whispered a few details I knew of her.
“Name is Hailey, age thirty-four, five feet six inches...” My voice rasped against my throat, I looked back into Hailey’s eyes and felt a surge of violent anger. I screamed something, slapping her hand away, and fell into a deep sleep with one last rugged breath.
