Chapter nine: In Pieces

Blake Indigo:

“Delta radiation entering Omega levels. Fourteen Minutes until Event Horizon.”

“Damn those reruns.” I cursed finally reaching an exit. Why couldn’t they install a Tivo in this place. I walked up to the hatch, wondering how it got dark in the space of a few hours, opened it, and got hit immediately by a grey cloud.

“High concentrations of Ammonia, Carbon monoxide and methane in Atmosphere.” The digi-Pilot responded as I coughed out the inhaled cloud. “Rebreather required.”

“You don’t say.” I said gasping for air. Couple of deep breaths and I was good to go. I  fished out my Rebreather, the small mask fit over my mouth and nose, sealing around them and beeped with satisfaction.

Emerging out into the surface world, I saw just how bad things were. Time accelerated around Zorath and I with it being so fractured in there. The grass was gone, leaving only cracked, grey dirt. The oak tree was now a skeleton of it’s former self, branches deprived of leaves and roots exposed. The sky wasn’t a nice blue anymore and took on a more greyer appearance and lightning and thunder constantly declared it’s superiority with each flash and rumble. The digi-Pilot spat out a date, with a nine digit year to match.

“23rd of June, Three hundred million, fifty eight thousand and seven.” I muttered. “So much for an english summer.”

It was hard to see though the thickened atmosphere, much less walk though it, but I could tell that there was little left. I just pulled my hood up and started walking in a random direction, trying to convince myself that there was nothing left.

But there’s always survivors..

“Time to moonlight it.” I said, my voice echoing though the rebreather.

Commonwealth Department of Joint Services, Asia-Pacific Office, Sydney, 1:42pm, Tuesday, 17th of May, 2011

“Look Roxanne, it’s not as if Blake doesn’t have the same clearance level as you do. Wasn’t you who insisted on it.” The aged reptile concluded, being one of number of people in the building who’s been read in about the Indigo siblings status in the political world. She was a regent. He was a regent in training with the high council’s interest. Orearn had to know or he’d be asking the higher ups why a group of teenagers were had commonwealth shields.

Roxanne didn’t turn away from the window as she watched agents of various species work at a hastened pace. “Indeed I did. I’m just trying to ask myself why, if he did do it. It’s not as if he can use it on himself.” She ran her hand though her bright red hair. “Maybe it wasn’t him. Maybe someone actually used my IDent and...”

“You are hearing yourself right? Everyone knows who you are. I don’t think anyone could claim to be you. You need me to put a team on this?”

“Where’s Blake?”

Orearn breathed in and sighed. “On assignment from the Parallel Earth Protection Agency. Something in old Boston. Stop worrying. Wasn’t you who took her best chinese dress and her only cowboy hat and legged it to the twenty sixth century?”

“And I came back seventy years later wearing a while suit and a pair of sunglasses, carrying an ecto-foamer, unable to age another day.” She laughed. “Could you put him on this if he returns. As long as I don’t have to go in after him again.”

“My condolences to the poor soul who cross you Dragon woman.” Orearn agreed as he watched the young woman leave though the main office.

“I heard that!” She yelled back.

Clair Weli’sol

Boston, Massachusetts, United States, (Timeline 5): 8:46pm Wednesday, 27th of November, 2013

We walked into the isolation wards, and lead into a large room where uniformed officers were having their blood drawn and mutations examined. Nurses and doctors were wondering around wearing scrubs and lab coats and wearing thick gloves. Obviously, they’ve ruled out the possibility of it being airborne.

Then I spotted Carl Mathews. But the claws growing out of his fingertips did put me off alittle. I immediately came to the conclusion that this wasn’t just random mutations. This was organised, deliberate, and almost beautiful in a way.

“Clair.” My badge buzzed with Glenn’s voice calling out.

I brought the shield up to ear, making it look like it was a earpiece I was talking into. “Yeah?”

“We’ve got a problem.” Glenn said worriedly.

“Can’t it wait dear. I’m in the middle of something.”

“Ok. Let Blake get erased with the rest of the future then.”

“You left him in 2048?”

“Clair?”

I pulled the badge away from my mouth and saw the office looking at me with reptilian eyes. Those were new. Along with the tail growing out of his rear.

“Officer Mathews.” I said smiling and stubbling over to his bed. “Sorry. I’m still under the weather after tasting that stuff.”

“Wasn’t that a month ago? Must be strong stuff.”

“A month? That’s how long it’s been. Only felt like a few hours. Actuarially, it was only a few hours.” She shock her head as the officer looked confused at her. “Nevermind. It’s complicated.”

“Can’t be any more complicated then this.” Mathews muttered.

“My boyfriend is a werewolf, my I’ve known my daughter since I was in kindergarden, I hang out with reptiles, and my best friend has a suicidal outlook on life and refuses to see just how much he as to live for. And I think I’ve abandoned him in a post-civilised future.” I ranted as I checked his eyes and drew a sample of blood.

“Ow.”

I dropped the blood sample into a spot test, shock it, and I hoped the solution would come up with either blue or stay clear.

It turned blue.

“Mutigentic substances detected. Not infectious.” I said with a relieved sigh, making a note to have the nurses release the affected from isolation.. I dipped my finger into the packet and tasted it. I removed the finger from my mouth. “No. It’s impossible.”

“What?”

I didn’t finish. I just ran out of the room, with a confused Zane in toe.

Blake Indigo:

Somewhere in England- 23rd of June, 300,058,007

“Two minutes until Event Horizon. Initial signs of aether failure detected.”

“I’m a little occupied right now.” I told the electronic voice as I ran though what was left of a small woodland area with a swarm behind me. When they say the two things that will survive the end of the world are cockroaches and duck tape, I can say without a doubt that one of them will.

“Gaisi de fei lian!” I yelled as the minivan sized vermin followed, trampling what remained of the forest life in it’s path.

“Ninety seconds until Event Horizon.”

I felt the ground shake a large, tooth filled pit opened up.

I came to a full stop before I fell in. The cockroaches weren’t so lucky. They fell in and were eaten by the pit before it pulled back into the soil.

“Note to self, remember new found respect for earth worms.” I muttered as I pressed on, walking around the pit left behind. It wasn’t far now.

“Sixty... si... six...”

A sad looking glade opened up before me. Thin toothpicks of trees and large, grey mushrooms surrounding a large stone with anglo saxon runes glowing as I got closer. I pressed my hand on the rune and the writing lit up. The stone split apart, and the earth exploded open under my feet. I pulled of my rebreather as my ethereal limbs came into existence.

“BONZI!!!!”

Look on the bright side. It's only to be replaced by a brighter future.

Err...
May I ask how that's possible in that universe if said universe no longer exists?

Don't worry. There's going to be a lot of things you don't understand now, and one day, you'll know the answer to all things. Just not today.

Perhaps Clair will stop tasting weird substances until she transforms into something or gets a bad stomachache.

I bet for the latter one.

You really don't know the resident alien mad scientist. Labelling something as poisonous won't even stop her. Should have seen her when she was looking for a cure to lycanthropy.

So duct tape is there at the finish line, roaches- not. Those were not my guesses

Progress on the school case.

Don't forget humans. The ultimate survivors, or as far as their adaptability and stubbiness can get them.

I'll write it up soon. Hang tight.
