I have a Mermaid YCH officially open!

Now onto the Merman!~

As I believe I said before, Testing the Waters was the first AU I ever thought of for AOMS. I have a huge love for mermaids/merman... as if you couldn't tell x3 This AU takes place in a modern-day world where mer-people are hunted. Humans are aware of the existence of the mer-people but have never been able to catch one, for if they venture into the territory of the mer-people, they are met with an unfortunate demise. The spot of water where the mermaids reside is dubbed The Black Sea, for anyone who dares to venture there is dragged below never to be seen again.

Backstory:

Raye was once the Elite Guard Commander, the second to be precise. He had replaced the first Commander who had retired and left the kingdom to explore the rest of the ocean world. He never understood why the old commander insisted on leaving... until he took up the burden of being the Commander himself. In time, Raye then discovered the truth of why the former Commander decided to leave...

During his time as Commander, Raye had proven to be a worthy successor to the former Elite Guardsman leader. He showed loyalty, integrity, and combat capabilities far beyond that of any other merman his age. He would soon become sort of a mentor to an aspiring guardsman, who was none other than Prince Xandros's eldest son; Gregory.

Gregory respected Raye and almost idolized him and his abilities as a warrior. He asked to be personally trained by Raye to which he initially denied... However, after their king had forcefully demanded that he train the prince, he hesitantly accepted. Raye then began to work closely with Gregory, and taught him everything he knew... As time passed, Raye and Gregory began to form a strong bond. It started off as a mere friendship, and soon became something deeper than the ocean itself. Raye found himself falling deeply in love with the prince, and the prince felt the same for Raye (he crushed on the Commander from the beginning, however). They kept their relationship a secret from the king, because they were sure he wouldn't approve of it. Gregory felt an extreme happiness every moment he spent with Raye, and Raye felt the same... but there was a lingering feeling inside of him that wouldn't go away... While he felt extremely happy with Gregory, he felt extreme anxiety, and sadness at the same time. Raye didn't understand why he felt so scared, and sad. He hated feeling so uncertain about everything.

One night it came to Raye what he was feeling... he felt tension. He realized he hated being the Commander, and hated being under the thumb of the king. He hated the feeling of not being able to make his own choices, and he hated not being with Gregory most of all... He made the decision to run away and leave the kingdom behind. He wanted to take Gregory away with him, but realized that making Greg come with him would be far too selfish. As much as it would break his heart, he had to leave it all behind, and that would include Greg. The night he fled, he left a note behind for the prince to find and started away from the mer-kingdom... He knew the king would search far and wide for him, so he made for the surface... where no merman or mermaid would dare venture...

Raye's whereabouts were unknown to the kingdom. Eventually they gave up on their search efforts and pronounced Raye to be dead... This left the poor prince with a broken heart and a new obligation to become the next Guard Commander... he didn't want to believe that Raye was dead, but he found it hard to keep hope when no evidence turned up on him...

Present:

Raye now resides in the human world, and has made a comfortable life for himself. To feel a little closer to home, he works for a local aquarium and does his best to spread the knowledge and wonder of the ocean to the humans willing to listen. Humans are interesting creatures when you get to know them... they're all not nearly as bad as the king made them out to be. Sometimes Raye is baffled by their ignorance and selfishness, but then he remembers that the mer-people weren't so different.

(This all I will give for now, as I don't wanna spoil the whole story. If you wanna know more, then I recommend visiting my other two Testing the Waters artworks to get a bit more insight to the story. They are much short than this one, so I promise they are not as big of a chore lol x3)
