Description

Meet Silverstreak, a heroine I created for Racks View. She is classified as a metahuman and military property by the U.S. Government. Carlie Matthews was a U.S. Navy test pilot who while on a test flight was ordered to intercept what was believed to be a Soviet Reconnaissance aircraft trying to observe flight tests on a new Stealth fighter in the fall of 2010. The intruder turned out to be a UFO and she was ordered to force it down. While attempting to force the erratically flying UFO down her aircraft collided with the UFO and Carlie was exposed to an unidentified radiation. She was forced to eject and spent several hours in the cold Arctic Ocean before she was rescued. Not expected to live do to the high levels of radiation and exposure she was placed in a containment room to prevent the contamination of others.

Carlie slipped into a coma for over a month before waking with no signs of radiation contamination, however strange abilities started to manifest almost instantly. Her body showed signs of cellular regeneration and she regrew her appendix that was removed when she was 7. Her musculature also showed signs of change. It was found that as she ran her body absorbed the generated energy increasing her strength, allowing her to obtain and maintain a steady speed of 175MPH to 200MPH for several hours before her body would tire and require massive amounts of calories. She found that she could also dead lift up to 500 pounds while her body was storing this excess energy.

Being a member of the U.S. Military, she was transferred to Area 51 and it was reported to the media that she died due to injuries sustained after the plane she had been flying malfunctioned. While in Area 51 she was kept in isolation and her contact with the outside world was highly regulated. She spent the next six years being subjected to tests and medical procedures in an effort uncover how Carlie had gained her abilities. After the death of multiple test subjects it was decided that further more advanced equipment would be required, equipment that hadn't even been designed yet. The directors of the research facility, deciding Carlie was a security risk if released and afraid of her growing control of her powers, moved forward plans to place her in cryogenic suspension until the technology required to use her as a template for advanced research could be created.
One of the female researchers on the project from the beginning and a member of a military oversight group discovered the director's intentions and contacted an outside member with the information. Using what time was available, they created a plan and set it in motion in an effort to break Carlie out of Area 51. The night before the scheduled procedure, the researcher slipped into the secure ward that Carlie was living and revealed what was planned for her. The researcher then produced one of the super slick polymer test suits that she wore while running. She also provided a uniform to go over the suit to help her get out of the complex. As they were moving through a checkpoint, the base lock down alarm sounded, forcing the pair to fight their way through the checkpoint and off the base. During the escape the researcher was shot several times before Carlie could carry her to safety.
Stopping in the desert Carlie laid the mortally wounded researcher down as gently as she could. The researcher reached into her lab coat and pulled out a small packet and handed it to her before she took a final shuddering breath and died. After several minutes of tears and screams of anger, Carlie opened the pack and found a Driver’s license, credit cards, several thousand dollars in cash as well as an address in a distant city along the coast.
Using her speed and strength, she dug a deep hole and gently placed the researcher into it, along with all of the extra clothing she had been given before covering it up. Standing over the freshly covered grave, she paused for a moment before tucking the small pack of cards and cash into the suit as best she could. Looking off to the west and her new future, she paused and looked back. "I am sorry I couldn't save you Carrol," Biting back tears she continued. “Tonight you were not the only casualty, Carlie Matthews died tonight and thanks to you, Amanda Valentine has been born. I have to go now. I have a new life in Racks View waiting for me. I will always remember what you have done for me." With a blur of motion and a settling of rocks and sand the desert was once again silent and still as a silver streak blazed a path westward towards a new future.
