HEEY I just wanted to drop a comment here because I need to state how happy I am about what you said in that journal?
Plus I wanted to mention that your art style has always been a very unique one to me, I've followed your art on Instagram too and I've always admired your style and your color choices in particular, as well as your ideas like, drawing flowers and little things like rocks and plants and animals, your sketch book pages are super inspirational!
On that note I would be very excited to know more about this portfolio you've done? Funny enough I'm too in that last year of high school and thus considering art school as well and I should really decide soon ... do you have any ideas or experiences and tips, and also, can I ask how much you really had to work? LIke, how many hours you practised in a day? If I may ask?
In any way I'm very glad to see you're back on DA and I'm really looking forward too see you continue your journey!

aw thank you so much!! <3 this means a lot to me!
I'm actually planning on filming a video this week about my portfolio! I don't really know how that'll go because I've never done it before, so in the mean time I highly recommend watching other youtube videos on people's accepted portfolios. Normally theyll tell you witch schools they got accepted to and then they'll go through their whole portfolio piece by piece and tell you why they included it in their portfolio to submit to schools. They were by far one of the most helpful things to me when I was making mine.
And for the amount of work- mine definitely took a lot more work than usual because I didn't have almost any pieces that I felt were worth using, so I basically spent 4 months creating 15-20 portfolio ready works, witch was a lot. I definitely worked on it every day for normally at least 3 hours and then outside of that time, I was often drawing in my sketchbook. But I'm sure for most students, they wouldn't need to create that much extra work in such a short time frame- I just didn't have enough art.
I hope that helps a bit! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!! Thanks for sticking around!! <3

THIS IS PERFECT --
thank you so much for your response omg, you did help me out a lot with these suggestions wow, also I appreciate the indications of how much practice you put in, it did encourage me to consider it too and and go watch videos and actually start a sketchbook which I've never done before! owo
Hey so, if I may, I would indeed have more questions, for example what degree course you're going to attend exactly? Looking at your art style I reason you're doing something more in the fine arts field? What will the SVA teach you exactly, is it more digital or traditional, and is there stuff like sculpting or animation in it? What was it about the SVA that made it your favourite choice? And what do you love most in art, is it painting from real life or doing these narrative things like storyboarding or concept art etc?
Oh and if I may I'd love to know how you plan on financing college and life there too, since I have much trouble with that as well. Whether you're gonna take on a job or try to do commissions? owo
Thanks so much in advance if you're okay with answering and thanks again for your previous message too, you did help me a lot with it!

Aw of course! I'm happy I can help! Sorry for the late replies by the way, I'm still trying to remember to get on deviantart more!
So I'm going to go to SVA for 4 years and major in Illustration. One of the great things about an illustration major, to me, is that since its just about telling stories through artwork, you're not constricted to any one medium. So I'll be doing probably a lot of both digital and traditional art.
As for specifically SVA, they seem a bit more technologically advanced than a lot of other schools so I imagine theres a larger focus on digital art. SVA is really popping right now for animation, for example, so they've got a lot of equipment for that major that stays up to date. To get a good feel of a schools personality, I totally recommend looking at the College Confidential Forum's Visual Art section. Some parts of it are a little outdated, but that's how I really figured out what school really matched my own feeling on art. So SVA, feels a lot more modern to me and they also have a big appreciation for student's individual style, something that often seems to get restricted at other, more traditional schools. I also asked SVA to send me their view book (I think you can just sign up to get this on their website) and the amount of effort and personality in it was so charming. I also just really feel like I would do well in New York, and SVA is right in the middle of the city.
I definitely DEFINITELY love doing more conceptual, narrative pieces over things from life. I can have fun with realism, but crafting a story and getting to choose how exactly to tell it is just so satisfying and exciting to me! I bounced around on what major I wanted to go into for a long time but, god, illustration was so the right choice for me.
As for financial stuff, I'm really really fortunate to be in a situation where my family can pay for my tuition. But I'll also be filling out FAFSA and SVA can still give my scholarships after that (i think?). The rest of this year I've dedicated to making money. I've got a few plans I'm trying to pull of with commissions, and contests, and maybe youtube stuff. I dont know how well that'll go but I'm really counting on it since I really need to have my own source of money once I'm in college.
I hope all of that was coherent lmao. Let me know if you have any more questions or anything!!

There you are excusing yourself for the late reply and then THERE AM I WITH AN EVEN LATER REPLY (:'D)
OKAY FIRST OFF -- no matter the time I took to answer you, I absolutely loved your response!
I was just super busy with all that high school and research stuff, please know you've helped me out ENORMOUSLY nonetheless, and that also I find your choice to study illustration more than perfect! Simply looking at your art style and following it makes me agree so much to your statements, and I'm really happy for you that you've got this far already!
And also thank you soo much again for that beautiful response, for all the details and information, how you were talking about the school's technological status and personality was eye-opening to me, also that College Confidential Forum is AWESOME, indeed those entries in there are super helpful and along with what you said it helped me get to know what to expect from university!
And then what you said about the narrative and conceptual art thing, it's wonderful and yeah I totally see myself in there too! LIke, honestly all the fine art stuff isn't particularly boring but still, it's not at all the same to, say, comics or animation or meaningful paintings!
YES and then all you said about money is interesting as well, I'm so glad you shared that information too, and on that note can I ask how you're gonna go about contests for example? Where do you find them? :3
MAN it was more than coherent and I'm gonna repeat that I'm super grateful for this chat so far and indeed I do have some more questions, hehe c;
Have you thought about what to do after university, then? Like, maybe go for a master's degree? And then, what are your possibilities as an illustrator, I've heard often times about illustrating children's books for instance? And do you plan on making yourself independent one day? owo
Also, before you decided on illustration, were you ever tempted by degree courses outside of art? I mean, all that stuff about "starving artist", did it ever affect you, or what's your opinion on it?
Again, thanks so much for your time, you've helped me out very much already and I greatly appreciate it!

Really glad to help and thank you so much for youre support and thought <33
As for contests, thats def not the main way I plan to make money off of since thats a bit more chance-y, mostly I plan to do commissions, but art local art galleries and contests are helpful! I'd ask your'e art teach about any they might know (if you dont have an art teacher maybe theres a art center in your community or something like that to find info from).
After college is a bit of a toss up for me. I really don't know what I want to do with art, just as long as its something. I think I'd be happy working for a company doing something similar to comics, posters, books, ect but I can also see myself very happy just working a part time job and independently working commissions. Most art schools are very driven on making sure their kids leave knowing what their doing since art can be a very finnicky career and has a reputation for it, so I trust in 4 years I'll have a better plan!
I don't think I ever seriously considered anything else. I have no idea what I'd want to do with my life if it weren't for art. Its such a huge part of my life it felt like a no brainer to focus on that. My parents have also always been very supportive and never really told me I would struggle with it, witch certainly helped my feelings on it. I also just feel like in the new age of the internet and social media, the starving artist myth is loosing strength. Theres so many ways artist thrive off social media, as long as you can handle running it, you'll probably seriously grow your customer base.
Hope I answered those well!!
