Honestly, that's why I'm not terribly fan of the term 'Mary Sue' myself, at least in fanfiction. A bad character isn't just an unpleasant cocktail of angsty backstory, aesthetics and cool powers. A Sue (or Stu) should just be shorthand for a flat character that undergoes no growth throughout the story while still having their solutions handed to them on a silver platter without putting forth any effort, but nowadays, it's just flung at a (usually female) character someone doesn't like.
It's another thing altogether when the flawless, absolutely perfect (I won't say 'idealized' because there's no harm in idealization) character is put forth by a PROFESSIONAL author looking to make money off their work, however.

Unless I misunderstand the term, I'm not convinced this is true. In fact, many great stories are about the likeable underdog hunting the great and perfect predator.

I'm not referring to those kind of stories you mentioned. What I mean by "Mary Sue Hunters" are characters that are solely dedicated for poking at Mary Sues.

And in all honesty, I think people getting all worked up over sues are ridiculous- and the'r usually the ones who are 'wrecking' the fandom.

Yes totally! I'm doing a fic right now that plays this straight with a sociopathic 'slayer' Stu who kills characters just for getting in his way and is so bad he got thrown out of 'Canon patrol' training.

I have no idea, but some people do feel the urge to do so. o-o It can occur in "fan" art too...which is sadly what two of the people from "there" did.

A Mary-Sue is a fan character that either has way too many flaws or is way too perfect :3 Most the time they have abnormal colored hair/eyes ( Though this is most common in anime, so sometimes it's not counted ), and have multiple other characters ( Canon or not ) that are in love with them.
Also, having mystical powers in a normal story or being stronger than anyone else can be factors.
Ex. "Wow, I can't believe she just lifted that car! I've never seen anyone with that type of strength before!
