Taking place after the drawing 'Let's go hunting today!'and 'A not so happy family reunion' Mshindi spots Roho and his cubs and since Moyo was taken care of, he finds his chance to finish them all off.
Roho runs to save Tamu and Thamani's lives, while trying to get away safely from his murderous brother. He comes across two lions, a lioness and her son. Roho pleads them to take care of his cubs, saying that he is going to come back for them.
Eventually he never did due to some complications, leading to the lioness ultimately taking in the cubs as her own and using them in her plans for takeover...

I thought it would make sense for their names to be changed since I don't really think Zira would want those kind of 'soft' names their parents gave them. Plus in the case of Kovu, she would want to please Scar.

About Roho's cubs... She only used them as tools to get Scar's favour so that he didn't unleash his fury on her for not bringing a good heir. When a dying Scar told her to make Thamani, at that moment renamed Kovu, his successor, that's when she got another reason to keep him and bring him up as a killer and become a replacement for Scar.
So yeah. Other than taking back the Pridelands in Scar's name, Zira never truly cared about Kovu and Vitani as her own cubs. As for Nuka... She became too obsessed with her goal to even notice him, until it was too late at least.
