I am not all that familiar with the use of the Royal Voice in the cartoon (haven't seen past S2Ep2) and for the sake of making it easy to read - (as well as the fact NMM doesn't use the royal voice in S1Ep1) I just kept with normal English)
----
I feel bad for NMM both in the show and in this comic. She did bring it upon herself with trying to bring eternal night, but in the end she was still Celestia's sister and was forced to the torment of 1000 years alone.
I do not blame her for wanting revenge upon her return - she may have surrendered her fight for darkening Equestria forever after initially being defeated, but 1000 years is a long, cruel amount of time and vengeance is probably all she could think about.
Isn't it incredibly weird how - despite NMM's return destined to be at its 1000th year anniversary / Summer Sun Celebration - that she returns JUST as Twilight starts reading about her?
Anyway, if you don't recognize the reference in the comic, I'll explain it below.
If you wish not to see spoilers of the movie 'Rise of the Guardians' skip to the stuff under the ------
A guardian gets their power from those who believe in them. If a Guardian isn't believed in (or feared in Pitch's case) then they lose their power and become invisible to everyone but other Guardians.
For an example of power loss, the Easter Bunny is an anthro-bunny in his normal state but when he is not believed in, he literally shrinks and turns into just another regular rabbit (that can talk).
Basically, I got the idea from the movie and merged it with MLP and Nightmare Moon's banishment.
However instead of being banished to the moon, Celestia cast a spell on all the folk in Equestria to no longer fear nor believe in NMM (supported by the way no one but Twilight knows about her in S1Ep1). Because she is no longer feared nor believed in, she becomes invisible - and any living thing can simply pass right through her - but she also can't wreak havoc or alter the moon/sun because her powers have faded.
During the movie, if a Guardian isn't believed in and a real person runs through them (because they can't see them) it's a real shock for that Guardian. This is reflected in NMM's expression in the 2nd last panel.
As a result, NMM actually imprisons herself on the moon until the spell wears off and she senses the presence of one who believes.
It was proven in the movie it literally only takes 1 to believe for majority of their power to come back/remain. Unfortunately that 1 was Twilight...
/cue Episode 1.
------
I figured the Temple where the elements were stored would not have been damaged and such 1000 years prior to the mane 6 discovering it so there is no damage or cobwebs or anything.
There are only a few non-canon things I support when it comes to MLP.
One of them I don't agree with, is that whatever happened when Celestia banished NMM, she was not being this... 'Trollestia'.
Granted I still find some of the Trollestia stuff a little funny, when it comes to banishing NMM it's really not funny anymore. You can't joke about banishing your sister to the moon for 1000 years.
Fun Facts about the Comic:
-The whole thing began with this:
-The original file size of the comic was 3929 x 25182 px
-I had to save the characters, background and speech bubbles/border/etc. as 3 seperate files and merge them - or my computer would have crashed. (Note to self, work smaller next time...)
-All backgrounds and characters are drawn by me from several references found on google and dA. References were used for the two Royal Guards, the temple, the 'Mare in the Moon' Moon and the outside night panel backgrounds. However everything was drawn by hand, nothing was traced. No references were used for Celestia or NMM other than for colour reference.
-It took half a week to make this (majority hours of the day) not including the original 'Last Chance' image.
-Royal Guards are a Royal PAIN to draw.

My parents and pretty much everyone in real life (off-internet) aside from a select few don't support my liking of MLP: FiM and it was awkward drawing it in our open computer room but nevertheless I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed making this so I hope you guys enjoy reading it as much as I did drawing it
1000 years later
MAHAHAHAHA! I have returned - Equestria has seen it's last light of day! Now, the night will last forever! MAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA!!
WHA? WHO STARTED BELIEVING IN HER AGAIN?

How come I almost always see crossovers or references to "new" movies a short time after I see it? I guess it's just luck.
Anyway I like how you did this comic, and Nightmare Moon's expression in the second last panel reminds so much about Pitch's face when the children passed through him. Nice job!

Oh, I love this comic! You're so good at drawing Night Mare Moon - and you're making her look a bit more like a regular alicorn, too, not quite as gaunt as she's often depicted.
Thanks for the explanation about the Guardians; I wouldn't have known otherwise, and in fact I was a little confused at just what was going on in the comic until I read it. But it all makes sense now. The bit about Night Mare Moon banishing herself doesn't fit in with my own take on the events that must've transpired back then (what little we know of them), but it's an interesting alternative approach.
Isn't it incredibly weird how - despite NMM's return destined to be at its 1000th year anniversary / Summer Sun Celebration - that she returns JUST as Twilight starts reading about her?
It would certainly have been if it had been a coincidence, but I'd imagine that it wasn't one; Celestia must've taken care that Twilight would read about her, since she knew it'd take Twilight and the Elements of Harmony to actually peel off the layers of loathing, fear, anger and unhappiness that built over the course of a thousand years and more to actually reveal Luna again -- still alive inside Night Mare Moon, barely more than a foal, scared and longing for love and support.
Celestia must've known that she couldn't do this on her own, and that anything she could've tried would only have served to harden the shell that Luna was trapped in. And a unicorn with Twilight's sheer power and raw ability likely only arises once in generations, so when saw what Twilight could do even as a filly, she took her under her wing as her personal protΓ©gΓ©e with the explicit intent of making sure she could do the deed.
Of course, now that it's done, Twilight's studies still continue, and I like the idea that Celestia is training her with the goal of having her become a high-ranking official, maybe a royal advisor, an envoy to neighboring nations or something similar. But I'm probably disgressing there, so I'll shut up.

Thanks!
I enjoy drawing the larger, Alicorn (or alicorn-like) characters because their proportions are easier for me to get right compared to regular ponies. Strange 'ey?
I actually didn't notice that, hehe - but I like her look.
No problem!
Well, I had to still tie in the Mare in the Moon story into it so instead of Celestia banishing her to the Moon, NMM went their by choice instead of walking the land alone for 1000 years. There she'd wait until she felt the presence of one who believes in her again and then she would return.
Yes, I would assume Celestia would somehow have Twilight become aware of it - she disappeared for the whole first and most of the second episode but since she knew NMM would return, it'd be irresponsible not to alert those she knew would be the new holders of the elements. Not considering that however, at first glance it seems a little funny
Had Celestia taken on NMM instead of the mane 6 I believe it would have only corrupted and sent NMM into even more madness and darkness - despite being her sister, Celestia was NMM's arch enemy and the one she sought out to defeat for eternal night to be possible.... so the mane 6 /holders of the elements had to be the ones to save Luna.
Agreed about Twilight's power though - likely Celestia knew Twilight would play a large and important part in Equestria's future and simply prepared her.
Haha, that's okay I actually support the non-canon 'Twilght becoming an Alicorn' simply because it would make sense for her to become this, with her power mentioned before, and her determination to practice and learn from Celestia. However that'll never happen in cannon, so it doesn't matter

So do I. She looks great here.
Well, I had to still tie in the Mare in the Moon story into it so instead of Celestia banishing her to the Moon, NMM went their by choice instead of walking the land alone for 1000 years. There she'd wait until she felt the presence of one who believes in her again and then she would return.
Aye, that makes sense. But the "banishment" is too well-established for me to go against - so I'd assume that maybe Celestia could make her "invisible" for a while, but only a limited amount of time, and that she then banned her to permanently deal with her while she was still neutralized and powerless.
It would make sense, too: Celestia is strong, but she's not unbeatable (as proven by e.g. Chrysalis), so she could likely only hold off Night Mare Moon so long - and it would take the Elements of Harmony to banish her to the moon and seal her there for good, or at least the next millenium.
Aye -- Celestia couldn't have done it, which is why she guided Twilight and pulled the strings behind the scenes to make sure Twilight would succeed. (Leaving Twilight in the dark about it all was likely part of that plan, too, to keep her from losing faith in her own abilities. When the fate of the entire world rests on your back, that's a very heavy burden for a young unicorn, and I imagine she wanted to keep Twilight from getting that "I can't possibly succeed; I can't do this" feeling, since that would indeed have doomed her to failure.)
I actually support the non-canon 'Twilght becoming an Alicorn' simply because it would make sense for her to become this, with her power mentioned before, and her determination to practice and learn from Celestia. However that'll never happen in cannon, so it doesn't matter
It's still fun to think about, though, isn't it.
I don't think Twilight'll become an alicorn, myself, however; although it's never been elaborated on to my knowledge, I tend to think that it's something you're born into, the same way that earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns are born into their respective kinds. As such, I'd expect that Twilight'll always stay a unicorn, albeit a very important one - maybe in another one or two thousand years, ponies will look back at Equestrian history and tell tales of Twilight Sparkle, the most important conjurer of the post-classical era. I think she has the potential for that.
Of course, a sufficiently skilled wizard might possibly be able to actually transcend their own kind, too, and devise a spell that would allow them to turn into an alicorn. But I don't know how much power would be required for that, or if it'd be possible at all; a lot would likely depend on just how magic operates in the MLP:FiM universe to begin with.
My own view on it is colored by magic in AD&D (2nd edition, for no other reason than that's what I'm familiar with), particularly the Forgotten Realms setting, but I also think that magic in Equestria is essentially "wild", and that a sufficiently skilled magician can, in principle, do anything.
Magic is the raw ingredient; existing spells are recipes, and students in particular follow them in order to learn, but just like a skilled cook may not need a recipe to recreate a certain dish, or create a new one for that matter, a skilled magician is only really limited by their own finesse, their imagination, and of course their raw power.
So actually... who knows? Maybe Twilight could actually do it, in the end; or maybe not. It really depends on how difficult it'd be, how much power she really has, how much control she can learn, whether a magician can transform their own body that way (it might well be easier to perform the feat on someone else!) and so on. Even if it was possible, the born-alicorns might not allow it; and for that matter, Twilight might also not want to become an alicorn in the first place.
But of course it's all speculation either way.

Perhaps, that idea would work.
I don't think Twilight'll become an alicorn, myself, however; although it's never been elaborated on to my knowledge, I tend to think that it's something you're born into, the same way that earth ponies, pegasi and unicorns are born into their respective kinds
I actually also support the idea that Alicorns are not 'born' but 'appear' or transform from certain regular ponies (or events) when a new Alicorn is needed. Seeing as how the three Alicorns in MLP are all princesses and all three very powerful and supporting extremely important roles in both the story and Equestria itself, if a new kind of leader or new kind of magic was needed then a new Alicorn would be needed. However as far as anyone knows, Celestia and Luna have lived since the dawn of Equestria and I don't know the story behind Cadance, but in a way it would make sense for new alicorns to have previously been regular ponies (however if defence of everyone else who disagrees, they may have been "born". Question then is, if Alicorns are immortal then where are their parents?)
Yes which is why Twilight is so favoured as a future alicorn in the fanbase because her sheer magical ability and goals to be one of the best magic users from learning so much support it in the minds of those who support her becoming an alicorn like I do.
Even if it was possible, the born-alicorns might not allow it; and for that matter, Twilight might also not want to become an alicorn in the first place.
I would expect Twilight wouldn't want to become an Alicorn at first and it would be a huge shock (followed by panic and extreme worry and immense research into reversing it) if she just suddenly became an alicorn.
But like I said before, I can't find anywhere that officially describes where Luna and Celestia originated from. So, I stand by my views and will respect yours and anyone elses in the process
