Description

Fox didn’t know how much time has passed, since he was too worried for Krystal’s safety. They were able to follow the rest of the civilians to the emergency exits of the building they were in and now they were heading to their vehicle. Unfortunately, they couldn’t go as fast as he wanted because Krystal was wearing high heels.

Right now they were crossing a pedestrian bridge. When they were halfway, a figure stepped in the middle of the bridge and pointed a gun at them.

Fox and Krystal stopped and hugged each other, but more out of instinct than fear.

The unknown figure was a red fox, who chuckled when he saw the couple hugging.

“Well, well, Fox McCloud. Nice to meet you again, after all this years! And in such good company too!”

Fox growled. “Derek!”

Krystal blinked. “Do you know him, Fox?”

Fox nodded. “Krystal, meet Derek White. He used to be in the same generation than Falco and me when we attended the Military Academy. He was expelled on his first year!”

“And hello to you too, Fox!” Derek was smiling. “The fools in the Academy didn’t know I was a diamond in the rough. Instead, they expelled me because I had my own thoughts and wasn’t afraid to say them out loud.”

Fox looked at Derek with disgust. “You were of the opinion that sacrifices had to be made in order to achieve mission objectives. And those sacrifices you talked about were civilian casualties! That’s why you were expelled!”

Derek frowned. “What I said was that if an enemy headed towards our civilians in order to distract us from their true objectives, we should strike at the main force and stop the enemy on its tracks, even if that means leaving civilians unprotected. But that was only to deliver a crippling blow to the enemy, instead of dividing our forces! And I believe the constant invasions prove me right, don’t you think?”

Fox shook his head. “No, they don’t! Corneria needs to expand its military and prepare the civilians for such things. And what are you doing here? Did you become a common thief?”

Derek chuckled evilly. “No. I only joined the black ops team of the Cornerian Armed Forces. Actually, I’m here for you. You see, we have a team of scientists that believe we can improve our soldiers if we give them a genetic treatment. That way they could have, say, telepathy?”

Krystal got closer to Fox. “Do you intend to capture me so those scientists could made experiments with my genes?”

Fox growled. “You’re mad, did you know that? And in case you haven’t realized, there is a robot on a rampage!”

Derek’s answer to Fox’s question was a smile. That fact made Fox realize something. “You are controlling it! That’s why it’s only shooting at empty warehouses! It’s only a diversion!”

“And you were able to deduce it on your own, Fox? Congratulations! But Krystal is wrong. We are not only interested on her genes. After all, you, Fox, are capable of using a magic staff and your talent as a pilot is legendary!”

“We’re not going with you! Besides, General Peppy…”

“The general will be informed of your unfortunate accident. You’ll see, Fox, this weapon isn’t your average blaster. It’s a special weapon designed to leave an organic target brain-dead. Your bodies will still be alive and the experiments will proceed. And the only reason I’m telling you this it’s because this weapon is a prototype and needs a lot of time to charge a shot. Farewell!”
