Description
Suddenly, Cedric started to laugh and Krystal, Drossel and Cesar looked at him puzzled.
“My apologies,” said Cedric between laughs, “but every time I remember Prince Eric reorganizing the militia, I remember something else. Let me calm down and I’ll explain.”
“One of the problems faced by the arctic foxes was piracy. Every year several pirate bands attacked their towns for loot and slaves. To fight them, Prince Eric ordered that every male that come to age to be trained in war and arm themselves with their own shield and weapon, usually a war axe.”
Drossel tilted her head. “Why an axe, if a sword would have been better?”
“Because swords are more difficult to craft than axes. The process to create the high quality steel required for a sword was new and the first swords were too expensive for a common villager to purchase. An axe was cheaper and could be made by local blacksmiths.”
Cesar said. “I understand that decision. It will give the local authorities trained warriors to reinforce the town guards in case of an invasion.”
Cedric nodded. “Precisely. Anyway, when Princess Holy heard about his husband’s idea, she asked for the females to be trained too. Since Prince Eric had learned that arctic and cerinian vixens took part in the defense of their homes when they were attacked, he agreed. And, well, that made me laugh.”
Krystal raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
Cedric raised his arms. “Calm down, Krystal! I didn’t laugh because I think it was a bad idea. I laughed because it turned out to be an excellent idea!
Krystal blinked, confused. Cedric chuckled and continued with his story.
“Listen. Five years after her marriage, all combat capable foxes and vixens in Princess Holy’s hometown were already trained to fight. The next year, a pirate band disembarked south of town. Prince Eric took command of the local army and marched to face the enemy. But it was only a diversion: a larger group disembarked north and headed towards the town.”
“However, Princess Holy knew that pirates used diversions, so she dispatched scouts. When she was informed of the pirate force coming from the north, she ordered any trained vixen to take arms. She told most of them to follow her to prepare an ambush while some stayed behind to protect the town.”
“Since Princess Holy had been taught combat tactics by her husband, she knew how to prepare the ambush. She chose a hill with shrubs to wait. When the pirate force came, she waited for the right moment and ordered the attack.”
“First, the pirates were attacked by volleys of arrows. Then, when their ranks were confused and weakened, Princess Holy ordered to fight their enemy in close quarters. Most vixens drew their melee weapons and charged, while some of them keep throwing arrows to cover their friends.”
“Their attack was so vicious, that the surviving pirates simply tossed their combat equipment and ran away. At that time, Prince Eric’s forces had defeated their enemy and learned from their captives of the pirates’ true plans. Fearing for their wives, sisters and daughters, the males returned to their town as fast as they could. However, instead of a massacre or a burned town, they found something unexpected. When they arrived at the beach near the town, the pirates came running towards them. They drew their weapons, but the pirates just ignored them, too scared to realize their presence and just ran in front on them without stopping.”
“Then, they realized, astonished, that their wives, sisters and daughters, were pursuing the pirates, with Princess Holy leading them. Actually, the vixens were so determined to make pirate mincemeat that they also ignored Prince Eric’s forces. They didn’t stop until every pirate was either dead or had fled in their ships.”
“The pirates lost most of their men while nobody died on either Prince Eric’s or Princess Holy’s forces. Now, do you understand why I laughed, Krystal?”
Krystal smiled. “Yes, I do!” And she started laughing alongside Drossel and Cesar, the image of a bunch of rude pirates running away like scared pups from an army of angry females playing in her mind.

I love the confused face on Eric. Best not to have any arguments with Holy.

They really love each other. That's why Eric taught Holy about combat and tactics in the first place: so she can proctect herself. He probably didn't expect to be such a good teacher.

From the looks of it, he taught her too well. The females became amazons.

You're welcome. But the hatred towards pirates is enough for the vixens to become amazons.
