5 a.m.

Oh Jesus was it early.

Plopping into your work chair, you leaned over the back of it to pop your back, letting out a pleased grunt when you did so. You weren’t tired. Oh no, how could you be when you were working on what looked like a highly developed machine?

In fact, waking up at 5 a.m. is considered late for you.

“Please work for me, buddy.” you mumbled as you scanned the robot lying on the table before looking over your shoulder at the pile of various lower quality robots.

Taking a screwdriver, and a few wires, you opened the fuse box and began working. A few shocks and sparks here and there caused you to jump a bit, but other than that you were still in concentration. Connecting the final wire, you pulled out of the box to screw the box back down onto to robot.

Rubbing your hands together you switched the button on it’s back, waiting for it to start up. Hearing a few whirring noises excited you. You’ve never gotten this far before! A few clicks and the thin metal over the robot’s eyes flicked open as a dull light brightened them from the inside. You about peed yourself you were so happy.

“Oh dear...Y-y-y-” the monster ticked and stuttered out of its speakers, it’s eyes sharply looking between you and the ceiling. “...Can’t-t-t-t...Ta----k...new...speak-” and its speakers cut out right then. Leaving the robot’s lips to move in silent words.

You could only nod in understanding as you shuffled around your garage, in search of a new speaker for the robot. Ripping a newer one out of one of your failed robots, you felt eyes on you as you turned back to the table. A horrified expression painted the robot’s face, which you assumed was because of it (him?) watching you totally just dismember one of it’s kind.

“Do you want to speak or not?” You questioned in response to him shifting away from your screwdriver. He reluctantly stayed in place as you opened the cold metal of his chest, removing the wires that connected to his speaker.

Closing up his chest you leaned back in anticipation, “Test that out now.”

A few clicks.

A minute passes.

Then finally…

“Oh GOD does this feel good. Not the fact that another’s speakers are inside me, but oh YES does it feel AMAZING to talk again.” He gushed, sitting up so fast it caused you to jump. He fluffed his hair and adjusted his boots before fully hopping off your table. “Oh do be a dear and get me a mirror. Can’t go out looking like this!”

You stumbled over your words at how flamboyant this robot was. Did you miss something?

Nonetheless you still found a hand held mirror and gave it to him. You watched as he switched his gloved hand for a built in comb in order to style his back synthetic hair over one eye, and then switched his hand yet again to some weird object that he placed on his eyelids that left behind a pink eyeshadow, and did the same to his lips, but with lipstick instead.

As he continued to fix his already perfect appearance, you decided you’d try and talk to him, see where he came from and why he was broken down. “Um...what’s your name? If you have one?”

He stopped his ministrations to give you a bewildered look, “Do you not know?” After shaking your head, he gasped, “Oh dear! You’re killing me! Do you not watch tv or listen to the radio at all?” another shake, “Oh god...I’m Mettaton! Sound familiar? If not I have a few copies of my movies, you must watch them!”

You cringed a bit before deciding to change the subject, “Where are you from? And how did you break down?”

Setting down the mirror, Mettaton slipped on a dazzling smile and struck a dramatic pose, “Why, the underground, of course dear! That was my big selling point when I came up to the surface! You humans love foreign things!” he winked at you, switching his pose to dance around a bit.

“That’s cool and all, but how did you break down?” you repeated, “Was it from rebels or…?”

“Oh! I don’t actually know! I probably ran out of battery! I was on my way to my charging station and I guess I never made it! It’s always a blur when I do.” The robot twirled behind you, grazing his metal arm over your back as he passed.

You adjusted yourself a bit, the touch having sent a cold chill down your spine, “How are you considered a monster? Is it how you’re built or-”

“Oh DARLING, these questions are so invasive, don’t you think? Why don’t I ask you some questions? I think it’s only fair.” Stopping his twirls, he pulled himself back onto your table to sit with his legs crossed. “How did you find me?”

“I was searching for more parts and found you broken down just outside the city. So I took you back to my place to fix you up.” You wrung your hands as he kept his unblinking eyes on you. Why was he making you so nervous?

“Hm~” He hummed, switching his position to lying sideways across the table, “Lucky me, another Alphys…” Mettaton seemed to think aloud. “Enlighten me, will you, dear? I’m a bit vague on how human aging works, you guys live such a short span of time! Will you give me your age?”

The way he expressed how you live a short life compared to monsters sounded almost humorous to him. Feeling as if he was thinking you old in human years caused you to pout as you answered him, “I’m 21, which is considered young for humans.”

A melodious laugh flitted through his speakers as he cast his eyes up towards the ceiling. Your cheeks unknowingly reddened at the sound. It’s unfair for a robot to sound perfect laughing. Weren’t they supposed to not have any emotion? Let alone be able to laugh?

“Yes, in fact you are considered very young in monster years too, sweetcheeks. You don’t look a day over 100 monster years to me.” At that he cast you a charming smile, before facing the ceiling once again. “Humour me one last time. This is some-what of a serious question.”

You sat up straight in your chair under the lidded stare he gave you out the corner of his eyes, “S-sure. I can answer anything.”

A pleased spark lit his eyes (could that even be possible?!) as he shifted so that he was crawling on all fours towards you. Your whole face seemed to erupt into a bright shade of red, his pink eyes pinning you in place so you couldn’t back away. Finally a couple inches away, he lent forward to get close to your ear.

You froze as you could feel the exhaust from his motors on your neck.

After a few moments of you two sitting there in each other’s presence, you heard a light chuckle come from his speakers, sending an electrifying chill down your spine.

His mouth was against your ear, and you swore you were going to die when he finally asked…

“Would you ever smooch a ghost?”
