Description
Hey, remember that –huge- project I said I was working on in my journal awhile back? This has nothing to do with it.(though I will be starting that relatively soon!)
Whenever I go through my bookshelf, I come across a certain blue folder. In it is many old things, including a research report from 6th grade, a silly short story from 8th grade, and these, which aren’t nearly as old as I’d like to say they are.
These. I called them “Oddogons”. My method for ‘drawing’ these was simple: randomly zigzag the pen around on the paper, give it an eye, maybe a few other marks, and a name. voila, new creature.
And my god did I make a lot of them. I wasn’t attached to many of them, and even then I couldn’t remember many of their names. But despite their forgettability and painfully high crappiness attribute, I still like a majority of them.
Now then, the point of this project should be pretty clear. I am simply redrawing them (in the same medium) with my current art skills. Despite the title, no, I am not doing every single one of them. Only most of them.
Guys. I did 50 pages of these things. FIFTY. PAGES.
Some of them I redrew literally, some I used what I saw in their design back when I first made them, others I’m taking more of a ‘silhouette sketch’ approach. But regardless, I’m trying to stick very closely to the original designs, with all the unbalance that doing so will inevitably bring.
So here’s the first page of revamps! I tried to put the old ones in vaguely the same arrangement as the new, but hopefully it’ll be obvious which is which regardless.
I’ll give my brief thoughts on each.
Hakahuna- this was one I always liked. I’ve always seen him as “your cuddly plushie friend” yes, that is a dino with paw pads.
Foo Foo- irritating spoiled little dino-dogs. they’re good at commanding other creatures to do their work for them. Namely, bringing them food. I think I named it because “generic mean little spoiled dog name”
Cuz-Kuz- GARFIELD IS THAT YOU. Actually, their similarities only occurred to me during the redraw. I imagine these things are mountain-dwelling herbivorous tanks. Your typical gentle giants, eager to help out other species, and thus not having many enemies save for larger or efficient packs of desperate predators.
Koro- this is exactly how I saw it back then. I stylized the tail a bit, but that’s really all there is to say on the matter.
Whoees-they are ALWAYS EXCITED. Hence name. I tried to go for a cute-n-spiky look in the redraw…and throw it off a bit by giving them soulless eyes. I quite like this redraw; I think my unbalance worked moderately well.
Uza- I wasn’t going to do this one at first because I still don’t get how their joints work. Uza are a fussy species, quickly getting frustruated with ones less intelligent and/or capable than themselves. Ones with larger and/or more colorful head plumes are generally better looked-upon.
Scorpok- this was the first one of these I redrew for this. it uses its tail as a ‘third leg’of sorts, but despite its sturdiness, scorpok can still whip it around surprisingly fast to deliver a nasty sting.
Dolgun-its design is already pretty clear-cut in the original scribble, so I took advantage of that and gave it a cool pose here. Dolgun was another one I’ve always liked. These things are super territorial.
Kattle- *shrug* not a whole lot of change here.
Hice- Hice are mischievous little flightless birds that travel in medium-sized flocks and live mainly on the plains. What they lack in flight they make up for in speed and group coordination. They show dominance in fights using the hard plates on the back of their heads.
Pozon- um. pozon. Pozon legs can’t work like that. The name comes from how I did(and still do) see this thing as a polar bear, albeit one gone horribly, horribly wrong. Yeah, try’n survive in the tundra with a build like that, I dare you.
Tiple- another one of my faves. Friendly giraffe-kitty. They’d make great pets and I want one.
Tulu- I had fun on this one. It’s like…a hummingbird-seahorse-butterfly…with unnaturally-jointed legs. It carries its tailfeathers inward when simply hovering. they’re also carnivorous. Yes, my intent in the revamp was to make it a little disturbing.
These obviously aren’t to scale.
Man, the long descriptions lately.
AND IT DON’T STAHP.
I have 4-ish more pages sketched as of now, but I still need to refine the lines and color them, so they won’t be up for awhile.
So yeah! Which is your favorite? Least favorite? Weirdest? Most boring? General comments?
