Description
In other words, four examples of my recent obsession.Watching Avengers not only made me obsessed about a particular character, it also reawakened my dormant Norse mythology fanatic (granted, it's a good thing Marvel didn't follow the original Norse myths in regards to Thor and Loki. Especially Loki, who was still cool but had a lot more issues, and not all of them family-related...)
As it is. Loki bracelet (color scheme tribute, at any rate), tesseract bracelet (might upload a close-up to show detail of the glass beads), Celtic knot design bookmark (scherenschnitte/papercutting anyone?), green scarf (it's almost summer, but hey. And no, I didn't make it, I just wear it...) and of course, runes (my respect to those who can translate it)
THIS FILM. I LIKE IT. ANOTHER!
(want to know what the runes say? [link] [link] )

Odin aside, Loki's still got quite the family.

Yeah. I noticed it, like, the 7th time I watched Thor.
And doi, his kid is a horse. And I think he has two other kids who are animals, if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, in the original Norse Mythology, Loki gives Sleipnir to Odin.
Midgard serpent (JΓΆrmungandr) and Fenris wolf/Fenrir. xD Heck of a family.

Wow, thanks!
I was certainly thinking of selling similar ones, but I'd need to know wrist circumference if I was to make one for someone else. These happen to be elastic and fit my own wrist exactly, but I'm not sure how they would fit someone else, so I may need to "tailor" the design somewhat.
Also I'm not quite sure how much I'd sell them for. xD

Yes it's probably for this reason that we didn't learned more x)
And about the Loki's children too, we could be like " How did he get a 8legged horse ? he was pregnant ? Or...he did something...hum...strange with a mare ???? " What about the snake soo ! xD
Yes I agree with you about Thor and Loki xD It's awesome, just imagine them
dressed like that ( as Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston of course !) is veryyy funny xD
It might be the Thor II ??? x) you know " The Adventure of Thor and Loki, and the stolen hammer "
Oww damn, I'm laughing just to imagine it x)

Haha, though in that case he was the mare... which is... awkward...
Now that--
That would be amazing.
I can't imagine Thor having to go to his brother and asking him for help in something like that. "BROTHER! I LOST MY HAMMER! ...did you take it."

Yes exactly !
I first heard about it at the same class as you ( when we were kids so ), but not learned enough x)
And the first movie I watched with loki wasn't Thor, but The Avengers x)
I fell in love with him and watched directly Thor, 2 days after The Avengers
And then, I was very interested about norse mythologie, especially about Loki and why not Thor
I bothers my family every days with that x) even my nine years old sister like it x)

Haha, that's great!
I've always wished to learn more Norse mythology in school... but I guess it's not appropriate for kids (because some of the things they talk about, especially Loki in Lokasenna... uh...)
My favorite Norse legend is probably told in ΓrymskviΓ°a, when Loki convinces Thor to dress up as a woman to pretend to be Freyja so he can get his stolen hammer back. Brother power, go!

Haha, yes, that's what I've written in runes. (It's based on sounds, not a direct 26 letter translation, so "learning" would be written as "lerning")
And yes, it looks like! I first started reading Norse legends in elementary school, but stopped later on. Now thanks to Avengers I'm crazy again.

That's good to hear. xD Do you have some tips on translating? I'm not particularly fluent in Futhark.
π: 0 β©: 1
Naliara In reply to ShadowZyn [2012-06-02 19:06:59 +0000 UTC]
Mmm... Well as I said I'm not fluent either, having not used the runes in ages. Besides I used them mostly for writing Finnish (which they fit a bit better). But I guess if you want to write English with Elder Futhark... it doesn't have corresponding runes for all the letters of the alphabet, so you've got to substitute them with something. C with K probably, X with KS, Q with KV or CW (I remember reading that Tolkien used these combinations with his Cirth runes since they too lack Q). I believe V is often substituted with U. I don't know about Y... It can probably be substituted with I (at least on some occasions). Thurisaz is used for th combinations and Ingwaz for ng combinations. You probably knew some of this already.
Now, before anyone comes whining about how I'm so wrong (I'm pretty sure someone will), I do NOT write or read Elder Futhark fluently anymore and these are just speculations about how you could use these runes. There's probably a number of ways you can use them, I am not an expert. Of course if someone reads this and knows better, they're welcome to correct me. (: Hope this helps.

I've been trying to come up with a chart of sorts to refer to, but it's been difficult (not only due to my busy work schedule) since there are so many nuances in pronunciation (it occurred to me that I might need to use Algiz for X for words or names that begin with X) Eihwaz and Ehwaz give me some trouble with all the ae/long a vowel sounds...
I didn't think of using Tolkien's Cirth runes, though, so I'll definitely look into that!
Since I've just started reading and writing Elder Futhark (well, English-based), your suggestions have definitely helped. I'm hoping to be reasonably fluent in it soon. xD Thanks!

Naliara In reply to ShadowZyn [2012-06-02 22:41:47 +0000 UTC]
And if you use the runes to write the phonetic forms of the words (i.e. how the pronunciations - I'm not really familiar with this, I've only ever used the runes for direct transliteration...), you might want to take a look at the phonetic alphabet, if you haven't already. That might help you.
π: 0 β©: 1
ShadowZyn In reply to Naliara [2012-06-02 23:20:24 +0000 UTC]
Incidentally, I did consult the phonetic alphabet on some words (primarily to check when to use Eihwaz) but even in just English it's a little complicated. xD
As always, thanks for the advice!

Naliara In reply to ShadowZyn [2012-06-02 22:32:16 +0000 UTC]
I think the easiest way is direct transliteration, i.e. simply substituting the letters of a word with the (most closely) corresponding runes. I haven't thought about the pronunciation... The Latin alphabet and the runes are quite close to each other in that they are both, well, alphabetic and not, for example, syllabic. The symbols represent single sounds (that may change when combined with other symbols - compare e.g. the 'a' sound in the words 'cat' and 'cage'. This doesn't actually happen in all languages, e.g. in Finnish every vowel has only one pronunciation each) and so you can just replace the letters of the Latin alphabet with corresponding runes - no need to think about the pronunciation. At least that's how I see it. I think you can use Elder Futhark to write any language that employs the Latin alphabet. Of course it does lack some letters but you can almost always get around that by using a little creativity. Elder Futhark is just another alphabet, not another language... So it's easy like that.
If you want to ask something about the runes or just discuss them (or anything else for that matter), drop me a note. (: I do love talking about anything that has to do with languages!

ShadowZyn In reply to Naliara [2012-06-02 23:16:46 +0000 UTC]
Maybe I should take up Finnish. xD
I guess it's just a matter of practice. I was thinking of trying to write some Shakespeare excerpts in runes, or translating parts of Lokasenna... probably those ideas are too ambitious.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind! I appreciate your help and the time spent in these long comments.

Want to flagrantly flaunt your Loki obsession without making it blatantly obvious? Here's how!
(jk)
Elder Futhark is written by sounds (naturally, there's no direct 26 letter translation) so the script translates roughly to "kan u blaem me for lerning elder futhark".
And by the way, thanks for the comment and the favorite.
