Description
So, this was a boredome doodle. I'm in a "Studies: the Art of the Graphic Novel" class, and I already know most (if not all) of the source material. In fact, I already owned the textbook! So, whilst the teacher was rambling away, I added the little voodoo guy because he made me chuckle, to illustrate the difference between realism and iconic characters.
For the benefit of those unfamiliar with what's represented, icons are simple images that have complex meaning. A peace symbol, a stop sign, a flag. A cartoon, is a good example of an icon. The character itself is an abstraction, an abbreviation of a person. As such, it is DRAWN as such an abbreviation. The little voodoo midgit has no back story, no inner conflicts, no motivation. He's a voodoo midgit. Not much more to think of there.
Meanwhile, Minsha's drawn realistically. She's the sum of every waking moment of her life, from her clothing, to her hair color, right down to her basic build and the fact that she's being cute with a machine gun. SHE is complex, ergo her artwork is no less so. And yes, I had to reference the MG-42 off of pictures at [link] to get it just right.
Oftentimes, artists will have abstract, cartoonized characters in almost overwhelming realistic backgrounds, to further emphasize the fact that this character is not like the rest of the world around it. Or, some things like cars just symply don't look right when abstracted. Sometimes, as like with this image, realistic and iconic characters even share paper space. A fine example of this would be a comic known as Bone.
Well, that's enough ranting outta' me. If you've read this far down, as opposed to staring at the girl's chest before clicking the back button, you have my respect and astonishment! Arr.
