I was a voracious reader as a kid, and thus actually read the manuals of my games. And thus I knew Sonic's sidekick was a little dude. A Robin to his Batman as it were. I never assumed that the brightly colored little fox was a little girl. Others did for some reason and were never dissuaded from this notion until talking with other fans much later.Took a cue from another artist's rendition of a female Tails and made her a bit more stacked and curvy than you would probably see. I guess I'm not into the lolita thing.
As a further note, I should ave made the tails bushier. Aw well.

Nice. Originally Tails was a girl in Sonic 2, but then developers said it would be better if Tails was a boy.

As far as my anecdotal knowledge of behind the scenes stuff is concerned, I don't worry about the plans and paths that weren't taken. There were proposals to make the character who would become Abel from Stret Fighter 4 a female. But this was found out after the fact. I was speaking of fans with no prior knowledge who just thought the shorter character was a little girl.
