Actually,It is said that Itachi got help from Uchiha Madara or Tobi as we now know him,to kill the Uchiha clan,and while they were killing the clan,Itachi couldnt find it in his heart to kill Sasuke because Itachi really does love sasuke as a brother,aw ^_^

Itachi was ordered to kill the Uchiha clan by the Hokage under orders from those elderly people that REALLY actually run Konoha. Madara had no part of it. He wanted to destroy Konoha itself and faced up against the first two Hokages.
