Description
My Orc rogue Gortek, he's an important character for me.I'm gay (if you hadn't noticed that from my gallery then okay!) but when I was growing up, sex-ed was "Outty bit goes in inny bit! And this is a condom, now put it on this banana." and when I was at school "You're gay!" was an insult although i'm sure that most folks didn't know what gay meant. But quite early on, I knew I was gay. But this was back then, I didn't have anyone to talk to about it and whilst my parents are not conservative, it was a case of when say, the Gay pride parade was on TV, my Dad would be sitting there grumbling about 'them poofs'.
So of course I didn't speak to them about it.
So I came out late, at 28. This was after 10 years in the army, and when I joined up, it was illegal to be gay and serve. If they'd found out, I'd have spent 6 months in Her Majesty's Prison Colchester and then been kicked out and good luck trying to get a job with 'dishonourably discharged from the Army' in your CV. And even when the law changed in 2002 I kept quiet, didn't even tell my friends.
But when I started playing WoW I was in a guild that had a fair number of LGBT folks in it and I was able, for the first time in my life, to talk about my sexuality. And a good friend of mine suggested making a gay character. So thus was born Gortek Swiftstrike, a Shattered Hand Rogue who was not a very good engineer, but made up for it with the application of a hammer or welding torch, and his love of explosives. And whilst he was gay, he wasn't overly outwards going with it, he was just a bloke, who happened to be gay. Oh and his wolf is called 'Stinky', and was bought basically from a used Wolf dealership, think "Uncle Garg's Wolf Emporium". Stinky was there because he was not aggressive, and was just a lil bit dumb. Gor fell in love with him immediately as he's basically a big Malamute or Newfie.
And it was this character, and my friends who helped me build up the courage to have the dreaded 'The Talk' with my parents. And whilst it was hard to do, it wasn't as bad as I thought and here I am today, still gay, still playing WoW and I thought it would do Gor justice by having my very good friend, the lovely www.deviantart.com/jinsonlygur… draw him
