Description
FINISHED PIECE : [link]-edit-
WIP2: [link]
-edit end-
so i'm doing a watercolour painting
ima try to stop myself using pencils at all on this, but it might be necessary for finishing touches and smoothing at the end
this is the first time i've used watercolour paints on a proper portrait with no other mediums, and it's so fun!
this is how i paint generally
before i paint my desk is covered in crap XD so i clear it and put all the painting stuff out
only 4 of my brushes were expensive, they're all thin and for details and they came in a £10 set, daler-rowney
my (main) paint palette was also expensive and came with a nice brush which is off the screen here
then the 5p brush, i got at a car boot sale XD i got 10 for 50p and they're friggin brilliant! as good asthe daler-rowney
the set with the circle around it was 99p at the pound shop
i bought it for the different shapes
the synthetic wide flat ones are perfect for base tones, and there's a natural one with the thinnest tip i own, which is perfect for shiny white bits and eyelashes etc
haha broen ice cube tray for my paints XD it's perfect though!!
tissues are essential for me, for blotting and drying and wiping up smears
and i need papr under my drawing to test things on and get rid of excess colour
this is the only paint set i'm using at the moment, bu8t i have more
i have 2 watercolour sets (in tubes) which were £1 each
i have an acrylics set that i bought the other day for 99p, haven't used it yet
and an oil set which i'm terrified to use1 that was also £1
it's not my fault the pound shop has art supplies!
i mean, they're not the most amazing quality, but they're enough, and i don't need amazing quality cos my art isn't for school or anything
yeah so that's what i'm using while painting this thing that's in front of me right now
i also have 2 computer screens: VERY useful ^_^
my gerard way digital portrait, most recent WIP cos i still haven't finished it XD [link]

well, i usually start by mixing a little orange and brown
then i water some of it down in a separate section it down, lay the base tone
then i take some from the original, and water it down a bit, i use this for subtle shadows
so it gets more and more concentrated
and i desaturate it with mroe brown and less orange the darker it gets ^_^
i use a brush to smooth the shading,
sometimes it works better wet and sometimes dry so it depends

We were told to mix a bit of red, yellow and white, and sometimes a little brown depending on what skin colour you want; that works too

yeah the red and the yellow makes the orange
i skip[ a step, but it always depends on the skin tone
sometimes you need some pink, sometimes you need more yellow or brown ^_^

hahah
yeah, i find it slightly easier to work in a mess if it's too neat then i never feel arty for some reason
woohoo! i used to work off a screen, but it's so much easier to print things off to copy i didn't realise that until recently

Notice that I use the milkshake paper cup from McDonald's for these wooden things which remain after whittling
I don't mind drawing in mess or in a neat place but it must be a lot of light. But that event was an exception
Yep, it's far easier! And you don't damage your eyes by looking at a screen ^^

Lol, cool, you have 2 computers, howcome And are those expensive brushes really thin cause when i buy thin tipped ones, once i use it the tip unsticks and spreads then it's a normal round brush =,='
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
sharmz In reply to MuGi-da-G [2009-08-24 08:48:45 +0000 UTC]
yeah they stay thin ^_^
once i'm done with them, i dip them in water and smooth them to a point and let them dry that way
but they look round when they're dry but once you get them wet, they turn into a point ^_^
haha i have 2 screens, connected to the same computer ^_^
gives me more space for stuff on my computer
atm i have dA on the right screen and the gerard way photo on the left

You can DO THAT never knew...
I thought that the thin tip are supposed to be hard and pointy at all times

sharmz In reply to MuGi-da-G [2009-08-25 12:40:31 +0000 UTC]
hard?! they'll go that way if you dip them n glue and let themm dry, but that's a sure fire way to ruin your brshes
nope, you just use pinty brushes with a soft touch
