I love designing gnarly, grody old characters. In this case it's a smelly old sea lion that hangs out in front of his fruit stand, challenging whoever walks by to a game of checkers.For the background, honestly, it was mostly loose mid-day color/light practice. I still feel like I need a LOT of practice with this stuff! I was really inspired by Portofino Harbor in Italy for this background, I love the bright, sunny, colors on the buildings!

I would so love to play checkers with this elderly sea lion dude. He must be a PRO after all these years of challenging tourists or other members of the community just passing by. The face, the hands, and the belly also give him a realistic appearance as well.
