Its a photo, at a lake in Kentucky, USA. The mud was especially nice at the bottom of the lake. Full of microscopic creatures no doubt. It took me hours to scrub the charcoal from a camp fire off my face though...

Yes - water does undo mud. Fire damage seems a lot tougher to manager. Must not have been a deep lake.

It's a very deep lake. They flooded a town to make it. I've heard there are still houses intact beneath the water. We were in a shallow area though. Shallow and muddy instead of rocky like most of the lake.

Sounds like "Deliverance". Although mud doesn't appear much in the film -- just a submerged community.
