You are not doing anything wrong. The mean thing is you need the third spirit for the blue eyes. So it's pretty much in the end....and as far as I remember even if you replay a chapter (later when you have finished) his eyes will be normal again (except when you play the third part....)

In game (hud display off) and hit key F ( I am on PC, don't know others), position the character off set not in the middle and give a bit interesting angle. This picture is totally cute as he "looking down at me' from the near branch.Β
