USING REFERENCES
Disclaimer: Some will disagree with me on how to use references, which is totally normal. This is just how i believe is the best and more beneficial way to use them. If you disagree and have a better tutorial feel free to link in the comments with your (polite) argument, i won't delete them if they aren't flamey or antagonistic XD. Alternate viewpoints to consider: [link] [link]

This is just born out of seeing what a lot of beginner artists do, which is straight up copy a photo and re clothe it. Sure it's legal and like stuff to do this, especially if you credit the photo, but it's not IMO the best way to draw with references. This is not the same as studying from a photo or doing live modelling sessions. Studying is not passed as original art and the goal is to learn and get close to the original. Drawing from the mirror or a live model is also different because of the way your eyes work. You have to actively decide how to flatten the 3d image your eyes receive into one 2d flat image you draw and this exercises your brain in ways photos will never do.

Just copying a single photo for what you have problems with or the entire pose isn't going to be as helpful as examining many, this attempts to replicate what having a live model would do, that is give you dimensions and 3d form to learn from. I believe it's the best way to use references and I believe it'll be beneficial to many beginners.

improvement takes time, don't get discouraged xOx, you'll always be looking at refs for something or another because you should always be learning to draw something new

i use references in a different way :3 but this is kind of helpful too. there a lot of point of views, and a lot of them WORKS. i'll try to use different ways to use a ref. actually, they helps me a lot in what i do. i usually credit the stocker i ue the most (for other things, i usually use my own body, like schetches and such) :3 and usually i use references for most of my drawings BUT i'm uber happy, 'cause i could do [link] using some tips i learned from past references and such >.< IT IS DIFFICULT, but when you see the drawing taking life, it is amazing

I really like this. It actually teaches a lot.
I used to be in an art class where they just expected us to copy the photo.

Shattered-Earth In reply to SolaceRose [2012-11-02 15:39:35 +0000 UTC]

copying photos can be useful for people who have not developed the eye-muscle connection yet, but when you start moving onto original art it gets less helpful imo. thanks for finding this helpful and letting me know!

ano how many times should i draw a pose until it stays in my mind and when i draw then i dont need to use reference?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shattered-Earth In reply to xclevermadness [2012-10-04 17:36:05 +0000 UTC]

I think you're approaching it wrong. The goal is NOT to memorizing a pose. Ever. you are trying to learn how the body works when you examine the images. If you just memorize poses then you're still just copying that pose in your mind when you draw . You should be studying how the shapes and muscles work in pictures (or folds, or wahtever) to learn how they work so you can manipulate it in your mind.
