Description For character design this time we did emulation - which basically meant we had to choose 3 from a list of artists/styles and try to emulate them.

Ok, this is the third artist that I emulated - Shane Glines.
Now there was a lot of debate about this picture because another category was Modern Cartoony, which basically encompasses cartoons you see today on things like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. Shane Glines art is what inspired the Batman cartoons and such, so his art actually fits into the modern cartoony category. The problem with mine is people thought it looked more modern cartoony and not enough Shane Gliney. People said that if I was going for Shane Glines, I failed.
But I beg to differ.
See our teacher gave us a file with a bunch of examples from different artists, including Shane Glines, but my computer wouldn't open it, so I had to go find my own examples. And the examples I found of his work are actually quite different from what most people think of when they hear "Shane Glines". He has different styles within his style, and I chose to emulate art that isn't like his Batman designs.
These are some of the ones I was inspired by. (Just a warning. If you want to go through the rest of his work, some of it is...more mature? Lol. Scantily clad women. So be warned.)

I dunno. I personally thought I did a fairly good job. But maybe Im just kidding myself. Either way, I had a blast doing this and I love how it came out. So there!

are you going for animation or illustration or sequential arts or what? your so fluent in your drawing and coloring. I want to do character design and things but im afraid if i choose animation i wont get enough illustration like work and afraid if i choose animation i will never be able to do vise versa..

Well, I went into animation, but since the economy is so bad, I just got married, and my husband is in school, I can't really look for a job outside of where I live now because we can't move. I want to do character design as well, but I'll probably drift more towards illustration as time goes on.

Yeah, I really see no reason why your teacher would say that, I mean, I'm sure there are examples of his work that are different than this... But come on! Compared to the examples you linked for us, I wouldn't have been able to tell your work from his had they been side by side.

It wasn't actually my teacher, but moreso the other students. But its all good. People still loved it for what it was.

I think his style looks slightly more angular than your emulation of it. Lovely product, though! :3

very nice! Some things I really like about this style is the simplicty and the use of positive shapes and negative spaces!

You did do a very good job! I skimmed through a few of the works you had as examples, and noticed they had very small hands and feet, ect. You conformed very well to that style! And you managed the lineless thing well, too. You can really see the shape with only a few simple lines and shading layers.

Gar, BYU doesn't like his site.

I guess I thought she was a little "thicker" than his usual girls, but I trust that those links have some good examples of why you're right. I know mine wasn't that great an emulation, as some stupid anatomy creeped in while I wasn't looking and killed the graphic look his stuff usually has. Oh well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shayfifearts In reply to Kobb [2007-11-30 16:12:06 +0000 UTC]

Yeah...BYU wouldn't like his site lol.
Eh...I think I can see your point. Maybe Im biased and just don't like super amazingly skinny girls in skimpy clothes so I subconsciously made her a little thicker lol. I find it fun to draw girls, but not like that. His style in and of itself is amazingly fun though. I fell in love with it. X) Its difficult, but fun.
