Who knows, maybe that's why Celestia took interest in Twilight and gave the apple family a plot of land; they're decendents of ponies she used to be friends with.

That assumes that only ONE of the elements will ever become an alicorn. I fully expect us to get a whole set before the series ends. Now however, this opens a whole new realm of sadness when you remember that each one has friends and family outside their circle of heroines.
