Description There is a line drawn between Inspiration and Copying. That line isn't a "hairline" no, not at all, but a line that's thick, a line so thick that one should know when that line has been crossed.

Inspiration is fabulous, do not get me wrong.. In fact, I feel the world of art and fashion feeds off of inspiration. Inspiration is not the problem, it is when inspiration is taken SO FAR that the very last shred of what /may have been/ unique about something was ripped apart. Style theft, almost worst than actual theft, because it isn't illegal.

Yes I pull inspiration from many artists I see, of course, I pull inspiration from music I hear, like many..But never will I go so far to lose the element of me in my work, in anything I do, never.

What would be the value if you copy a storyline from a keyframe to a fork point and then create a different run?

Okay, obvious copying of another's work as your own is in very poor taste, and if you actually claim it to be your original work when it isn't or make money off of it then that is indeed copyright infringement and illegal. But all artists begin their craft by copying other artistsβ€”it's how you get better, it's how you develop your own unique individual style, so to attack others for doing precisely that, especially when they don't try and sell the pictures or claim ownership of them, is utterly ridiculous.

For some people, it's not that simple, especially when you're constantly hounded to be "original".Β

I agree with this stamp. I learned this the hard way throughout my previous years and it did put me in a very unpleasant bind as a consequence. I'm starting to recover from that, however.

Most people probably have a bit of themselves in what they make.
All this "copy" drama just grinds my gears (inb4 OMG you quote thefted seth mcfarlane)

At least your stuff seems pretty unique, hence at least this isn't pot meet kettle.

Lol, worry not, as Seth MacFarlane was the furthest from my mind.

But this was a few years old, and created from an experience with someone who was blatantly copying things. Not similar ideas, but blatantly similar (Same stock images, treated in the same ways, etc, etc.) This kinda stuff bothers me less and less these days.. it's all whatever man.

I completely agree. But I've got a story and I want to actually do something serious with it one day and I have a character of my own and a bit of an atmosphere in the story, before I noticed that the character and the 'mood' is actually kind of similar to two different animes that I like. In the beginning it was completely original and my own, but with time I kept tweaking, and now it's even turned into a different plot line. I'm just worried someone will accuse me of copying.

Yea I know what you mean, I hate it when I see copied work and everyone's like " IT'S JUST INSPIRED BY THE PICTURE" when the only thing different is something small. Say a 2 pictures of a cat, almost exactly the same except that one of them has it's tail tilting in a different direction, that sort of thing.

Inspiration is taking lots of small ideas from lots of sources and crafting it into something that is your own. Copying is taking a few big ideas from a few sources and redoing with little to no influence from yourself

Chris Brown comes to mind...I remember everytime I used to see hsi vdis I could pick out every MJ move, let alone the fact that the 'plot' of his videos, scenery, etc, was basically a 21st century version of all mj's. no-one listened to me, of course, until MJ died and chris brown beat up rhianna. obviously the media has major control on people's opinons

I see this used as an excuse so often...
When people justify rip-offs just because "everyone is inspired by something". Yes, well...most good artists are inspired by everything, only bad artists are inspired by only one thing (and that's usually their favorite artist). Re-doing the same idea and being inspired by something to make something unique are not the same things and it's ridiculous to say they are.

I'll raise my drink to 'dis~ Me--and a friend of mine--have had problems with this. Style isn't so much copied as our ideas. So say...I draw awesome picture of an alien on a carousel. I log on the next day, and a watchee of mine has just drawn a sketchy alien on a merry-go-round, in roughly the same pose.

I, admittedly, am inspired by television, music, friends, friends' art, school, etc. But I always credit. "This was inspired by a conversation I had with _____...", I got the idea while listening to "___ by ___", etc...

Yeah I know how that is. Hey, nothing wrong with inspiration, I'm constantly inspired by music, other artists, etc.. Sometimes when I've just looked through hundreds of pieces on here I just feel like creating and can do my best. Thanks for the comment!

My inspiration of Terry Brroks may be similar but I would never copy off of him :\ I have different ideas i would of love to put in XD and stuff...

But if it was copying (which i doubt) I really just shred the whole story intill it became my own piece...

But i do admite at time Inspiration and copying don't have a think line of seeing it...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shebid In reply to GodTiger [2008-08-15 07:21:49 +0000 UTC]

It's not inspiration that's a problem at all, it's when you can tell someone is using your style because they have no creativity of their own -- Nothing wrong with inspiration in my opinion -- for all things derive from an inspiration of another, you know?

GodTiger In reply to shebid [2008-08-15 07:36:41 +0000 UTC]

in most cases I would agree with you, but the person who steals would use that as an excuse....like Hinata-sanzo (who thinks she can take someone elses work and do it so much better than the original artist).....she blatantly stole my work and said it was just an 'inspiration' piece and she was using my art as 'reference'. then her art ended looked exactly like mine.
*koffkoffbitchkoff*

other than that, it looks good

shebid In reply to plaidNinja [2008-05-11 02:03:50 +0000 UTC]

That's bad too, it's all bad -_-

Inspiration to me is getting a boost off of someone's ideas to influence your own, ya know =/

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

plaidNinja In reply to shebid [2008-05-11 20:14:26 +0000 UTC]

yeah...like fan art 'n stuff. it's good to set a boundary between what's ripped off and what you use to inspire yourself.

when you see it like that, it's all good.
