i am a bit confused with the stroke path thing. i just read linda's tutorial and the one about the pen tool in the intotheocean site, and please correct me if i'm wrong: the stroke path method is when ur pen tool option is set to the second small icon underneath the basic ps pallette (edit, image etc). so, if this is supposed to be the method to do ur vexel, then what option should i select to make the lineart, when it shouldn't be made with a stroke path?

and do i select the 2nd icon for vexelling only because there is typically no lineart involved?

gosh i think i made this sound soooo difficult.. i'm sorry for that.. but i hope u can help me out with this..

Haha, I am quite confused. I make my lineart just exactly how I vexel, but in thin lines. Stroke path isn't an option, first of all :S Well it is, but you don't "select" it. It's quite commonly used to make hair in vexels.

Hmm.. I'll take screenshots, because I'm a tad bit confused about your question. [link]
Stroke path is something you can chose from the drop down menu when you right click after making a shape or line. Sorry, I hope I helped, but I have no idea what you were asking XD

yeah, the screenshot is what i also did, so i think it's ok..at least for that part.. but then, what did u mean in ur tutorial: "don't ever make a lineart with the stroke-path method"? i think this was the part that confused me most. =/ or was it sth completely different that u meant by that?

i have 3 more questions about the whole vexeling procedure.

1. How does contract under Select > Modify affect the vexel? the more pixels, the more realistic the vexel?
2. After the have applied the posterize adjustment, you are supposed to make new layers for all the shadows and highlights. so, do you make a single layer for each shadow, or do you group all the shadows of the same color value in one layer? like exact same dark shadow in one layer, lighter ones in another etc.
3. Is this supposed to be the baseline method? Starting with a color for the base and then using this contract option you move on until the vexel is ready?

i'm really sorry for asking so many things..

Well, if you don't know what the stroke path method is, then that's not really a problem.

And the other three questions:
1. The contract method ends up looking unnatural, I wouldn't suggest it. Just add more layers yourself by hand, it's far better looking in the end. Realistic vexels aren't always the best, and you don't have to have more layers to achieve realism.
2. One layer for each shade
3. The base layer method is laying down a flat colour, and on top, using different opacities for the layers, placing shadows and high lights.

Hope that helps :S

yes, it does, very very much!! thanks a lot for the info and the help!!

i guess then i'll search if there are any other tutorials available somewhere, with a different technique maybe. cuz the ones i've found are either not so much for vexel-begginers, or...just not that in-depth. i found some on vexels.net, but most of those links are already dead. T_T

but thank you very much once again! i very much appreciate the tips u gave me!!

how do you make the paths without the color filling in from the first point to the current one that is created?

shebid In reply to winterdiamond [2008-01-18 22:13:38 +0000 UTC]

alright, when you've the pentool selected, look at the tool bar underneath file.. edit.. images and so on, next to a pen with a down arrow there are three grouped choices. Chose the second choice. Hope that helps

This is awesome!
I was wondering, would the same sort of thing work in PSP? It has a pen tool and the basics seem the like they would work so I was just wondering if it would before I get started lol.

Sorry but I don't get it, If you don't stroke path what do you to to get the line to show up?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shebid In reply to SHYS0NGBiRD [2007-09-24 23:10:39 +0000 UTC]

you use the pen tool and make lines just like shapes.. very thin line-like shapes

monicarpediem [2007-06-07 23:40:45 +0000 UTC]

Haha nice & thanks. I used stroke path for my first (and only) line art because I thought that was what you were really supposed to do. Bah!

Tru3lyMistaken [2007-06-07 14:15:00 +0000 UTC]

Then... how DO you make lineart?
I use the stroke path... Most of the tutorials on here are using that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shebid In reply to Tru3lyMistaken [2007-06-07 18:28:26 +0000 UTC]

by making each line with the pentool itself, just as you would make a base layer

ashestome [2007-06-07 12:33:38 +0000 UTC]

Hmm...I don't think I get it. For one I've never seen the autodelete button, but I use Illustrator so maybe that's the problem?

I'm gonna fav anyway and look at it again and maybe something will click. I think the issue is I just kind of do whatever I want and you have actual "lingo" for yours so..haha.

Thanks! <3

I can do all this already, but i just think its amazing just becuz you put "wow" from the line you made, makes it more special
