Description

Today I wanted to show you some of my steps that I use to quickly redesign a character.

So here is the base, a drawing I drew years ago:

In this case, I knew what I wanted and did not wanted to keep:

I like colors and shape, but,  I do not like the nose anymore, I did not know what to do with the wings so I decided to wait to draw them, I could always add them later. so I sketched it and played with the contrast to give it more peps.

Once finished, I was happy, but not quite yet. While drawing it,  I realized that I did not like drawing spikes anymore because for me, it is a pain to draw from different angles and also, to keep them all the same size. So I decided to remove them and to remplace them with something I like to draw: FUR.

You may not want to own a character that takes you too long to draw or that asks you too much concentration, which can become annoying so if you plain to draw it often, just draw something you like to draw.

First, I drew fur all over its back. The face looked "empty" so I added a bit more fluff on the cheeks. At this point, I thought my character looked a bit like an Asian dragon so I drew horns and wiskers to see how it would look with typical eastern dragon features.

And here we are, I just made a slightly and quick redesing but the character look already a lot different, isn't it?

So here are my tips:

If you like your character but you do not know yet what to remove and what to leave, draw it as it is.

Something was bothering you? Something was difficult or boring to do? Remove it and try something other you like to draw.

Draw a quick sketch that does not take a lot of time to get a good idea of the final rendering while not being frustrated that finally the idea that you had in mind does not work.

Before reaching this result, I tried other things that seemed pretty in my mind but once draw it just looked bad, it happens, keep that idea for later, it may work on another character.

Drawing the things you have in your head will allow your mind to realize what it likes and what it does not like, it will then be easier to make decisions.

It will also help you understand when your "bad" ideas may be "good". For example; I wanted to draw small thorns, like the thorns of a rose, all around the tail, I think it is realy pretty so I drew it.... And it realy looked AWFUL. The tail already had 4 realy different colors, even a pattern, adding more details like thorns to it was a bad idea BUT,  now I know that next time I would like to draw a tail with thorns, it will be a very simple tail, and at that time, it will work.
allow yourself to make mistakes, it will always serve you later.
