Description For s Challenge The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree was written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein in 1964.

The story is a short moral tale about a relationship between a young boy and a tree in a forest. The tree and the boy become best friends. The tree always provides the boy with what he needs: vines to swing from, shade to sit under, apples to snack on, branches to build a house. As the boy grows older and older he requires more and more of the tree. The tree loves the boy very much and gives him anything he asks for. In the ultimate act of self-sacrifice, the tree lets the boy cut her down so the boy can build a boat in which he can sail. The boy leaves the tree, now a stump. Many years later, the boy, now an old man, returns and the tree says "I have nothing left to give you". The boy replies that all he needs is a quiet place to sit and rest as he awaits death. The tree happily obliges.

Just wanted to post my *ManipulateThis critique here with your deviation. Congratulations for winning Pick Of The Week for the beginner division!

This deviation does a very good job of showing the close relationship between the boy (obviously a teen at this time) and the tree by choice of the young man and the positioning of the two stocks. Plus I like the use of the clock to represent the passing of time, and the technique used to give the image a unique illustrative look.

Very nice. Makes me think of an old episode of Twilight Zone what with the watch face and all.

Great depiction of the story. I like the washed out colours, it gives it a effect a somber effect of all the sacrifices the tree made for the boy. Great work.
