There is a lump of desolation beneath the bony dip at my throat. It is no bigger than a coin, this spot, a peculiarly small place to hold such a feeling. I try to shove it to some deeper region, but there it sticks, a fragile skin-thickness from the outside world.

I thought of it the moment I saw this photograph. The Folk Keeper is one of my all-time favorite books. It is targeted, I guess, for kids around age 11-14.
I read it with my granddaughter when she was 10.
When we read the cited passage, I was so touched I almost cried. I wondered if Elizabeth -- only 10 -- had understood its meaning. I looked up at her to ask her if she understood it and there were tears in her eyes.
Since reading it with her I have bought about twenty copies -- all as gifts for young friends and relatives. I have also given the book as a gift to a few "grownups!"
I recommend it highly. No one I have ever recommended it to (or given it to) has been disappointed. [link]
And oh! Elizabeth and I became "Internet" friends with the author, Franny Billingsley. She wrote Elizabeth a letter once (a real one, not an e-mail) and in the letter she talked about the new book she was trying to write, and how slowly she was progressing. "You may be too old for this book by the time I finish it," she said, "but I know your Granddaddy won't be."

I think that's one of the nicest things anyone has ever said about me!
