Around Skylios the water is very warm, and to find large ocean fish the fishermen must sail out for some miles. In the south, the fish are said to be bigger and more numerous; but the dogs would usually head east, or west, as far as a day and a night could take them. Then back to the island they'd come, loaded with a great variety of sea creatures to sell. The cheapest are usually the squid and sardines, and bait fish, and fresh from a catch they would often skewer several sardines or squid and roast them over a small copper fire pit, or, if they were very fresh, you could eat them raw. A fresh squid is good sliced thin and put in lemon juice and spices. But these larger fish they would sell whole to the middle class, and for an extra penny or two they would also prepare it for you. The pure seafaring clans, of course, would not buy fish from the mongers, but they often bought and sold other things to each other, especially hemp twine, tar, and beeswax.
